I just replaced the filter drain only to now have an oil leak from the same area. After I start the engine I get a drip every 15 seconds off the bottom of the HPOP. I have cleaned it as much as possible to try and locate the source of the leak. I think it might be the lower plug but I am not 100%. Should I just remove the HPOP and replace all the o-rings? How long should I expect this to take and does anyone have a diagram for the HPOP. George
I do not have a diagram, but I just replaced my HPOP twice in a month. The reman Ford pump leaked. If it is the plug, dieselorings.com has a nice repair kit. You will also need the gasket between the pump and motor if you remove the pump. My first leak was between the pump and motor, just a gasket, but I decided to replace the pump with a new one as mine had 285,000 miles on it at the time and the pump couldn't keep up at higher rpms. The HPOP took me about 5 hours the first time, replacing hoses and fuel sleeves since I was in there. The second time pump alone took me 3.5hrs. So far so good on the new pump.
You shouldn't need a new HPOP. Most likely yours is leaking from the hose fittings or the gasket between the HPOP and the front cover. 3-5 hours is about what it will take to get it out and back in. Make sure you order the fuel sleeves when you get the HPOP o-ring kit. Diesel O-rings has all the instructions you will need too.
If you need an HPOP look at Riffraff Diesel you can get the T-500 for $349 by sending in yours. That is far cheaper than one from Ford will run.
I think I paid $800 for mine, but I would get an adrenaline pump from dieselsite, or elsewhere. I don't trust Ford reman equip. They have horrible quality control. If you don't have a check engine from a weak pump, I wouldn't replace yours. Mine was high miles, rode hard put up wet etc etc and I have absolutely no time to work on the truck, so I figured just remove and replace.
