17 gallon mid-ship (in front of the rear axle) fuel tank: 1985/88 Ranger w/a 114" wheelbase (not a Super Cab). The following is the only other fuel tank Ford offered (as an option).
E5TZ-9002-F .. Aft Axle 13.5 Gallon Fuel Tank-Use as auxillary tank / Obsolete
Applications: 1985/88 Ranger except Super Cab. There is no aft axle (rear) tank for a Super Cab available, because Ford never offered it.

First I would like to say that I have tremendous respect for Bill's extensive knowledge of Ford parts and his generous sharing of that invaluable knowledge with the group. I, on the other hand, only know what is in front of my long nose
I happen to own two supercab rangers with the front-and back dual tank option (the 87 and the 88). These certainly appear to be factory jobs, and I can only assume this is the 13 gal tank. This doesn't seem to be a common option, but I do see them in the wrecking yard now and again. They are steel tanks, so prone to rusting at nearly 25 years, so you'd have to be vigilant for signs of leaking and be ready to do a tank internal reconditioning (whole lot easier to do before you install the 'new' tank.
I looked on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and found rear tanks available, 2 of them listed as 'A' grade, all 3 for some reason in Canadian wrecking yards. Good luck with your quest!
I really doubt the Bronco tank would fit. It appears to be a larger (19 gal) tank, and the Ranger rear tank fits pretty tight behind rhe rear axle (where the spare tire mounts on single tank trucks).
It's kind of odd, searching Bill's part number brings up a Google hit on Ford Gas Tank - Huge Inventory @ iAutoBodyParts.com, with a description of a 13.5 gallon rear tank for single cab Rangers. However, following the link to their site, there is a note that they have changed suppliers and their catalog has changed. Searching their online catalog lists only front (side) tanks. Guess you could contact them, as it appears they used to sell a rear tank.
Extended Cab = Super Cab. Ford did not offer an aft axle fuel tank for a Super Cab. I made that plain in post #2.
The ONLY aft axle fuel tank listed in the parts catalog (*) for 1985/88 Rangers is for the 114" wheelbase, which is not a Super Cab.
The short bed wheelbase is 108" .. long bed wheelbase is 114" .. parts catalog doesn't list the Super Cab's wheelbase, but I think it's 123."

September 1985: I had one of the very first 1986 (first year it was offered) Super Cab Rangers in CA. My previous company vehicle was a 1985 Ranger w/a 7' bed.
I'm 6-5, the cab was uncomfortable because the seat was all the way back, so it couldn't be reclined.
The Super Cab's front seats could be reclined when in the furthest aft position...allowing for more 'stretch-out' room.
btw: My sig pic was taken at an FTE SoCal Chapter GTG at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, April 2011 by FTE Administrator IB Adrian.
Go to the SoCal chapter forum, look at the April GTG pics for this oversized ex-Ford partsman, I'm wearing an Hawaiian shirt (my usual attire).
I put a NEW rear tank in my 87 about a year ago. It was totaled a few months later and is being parted out. I got the NEW tank from a vender that had 6 at the time. They have none now. PM me if you want the tank cheap.

I'll take the tank!!! - Dan (danandannl@hotmail.com)
My search has been mighty grim.
My mechanic had a couple shipped in from a list of yards I gave him. The tanks were in as bad a shape as the one I already have.
I suggested restoration and was politely put down.
I thought I had one the other day. But it turned out to be a NO.
I had just bought this '87 Ranger from the neighbor across the street of all things. Had 27000 miles on it. Her nephew had
had the truck done over pretty good just before I bought it: new brakes, new shocks, new battery, new tires. and new exhaust.
After I bought it I had to have the pressure regulator replaced (it was allowing fuel pump pressure to the injectors since its diaphragm was shot) That was all that kept the engine running for the fuel filters were plugged solid and the injectors were partially plugged too. With an ignition module I have show room truck now. $2500 later.
