In my 1987 diesel, both fuel gauges fluctuate - go high and then low within seconds. I had an 86 Taurus that acted the same way. When the fuel pump in the Taurus failed, I replaced the pump and the gauge acted properly from then on.
Is this a common problem on the '86 and '87 Fords? Is it the wiper blade losing contact with the rheostat?
I sure don't want to drop both tanks to correct this problem.
could also be a wiring problem. Usually would be at a certain level, say 3/4 of a tank it may have a bad spot and drop to E if it is the sending units. If you are at 1/2 or what ever and then goes F then E it may be another problem.
The fuel gauge can fluctuate a little especially when its about half a tank or less, due to fuel sloshing in the tank. This usually occurs when stopping.
If it does this while sitting still, I would suspect a wiring issue or a bad sending unit.
Mine Does the Same thing it drives me crazy, when it gets around 3/4 of a tank it will bounce around all the way to empty the guage will just bounce from E to Full and bounce all over the place

Yep, that's exactly what mine does and it occurs in both front and rear tanks. I had an '86 Taurus that started acting this way but the fuel pump eventually failed. When I replaced the fuel pump (which included a new fuel level sender), the problem was corrected.
Thus my question: Was this a common problem with Fords of this vintage and, if so, is there a solution without replacing the fuel pumps?
Apparently it was not a common problem or there would be a lot more responses to this thread.
