Hello once again all. I got a question for all the experts out here. I got a 1977 F-150 ( I know its a 77 by the way the drag link is mounted. The parts book shows the drag link is for a 76/77. Short side with a slight bend on the pass. side. And pitman arm with a ball joint on the driver's side. But this is another topic.) The cab , hood and fenders I think are from a 78.
I went to the junkyard to get a new grille. The one that's on there looks like the thing they put up on the outside of florecent lights in offices! You know, that honeycomb plastic stuff? That's it!
My question is, what year did they have the long one piece grille with round headlights?
And what year did they change to the square head lights?
My problem with the new grille is the mounting brackets for the grille aren't deep enough. As soon as you set the grille up inside the outer shell, it bottoms out against all the mounting brackets.
What's the difference between these on piece grilles?
Is the one for round headlights shallow and the one with squares deeper?
I can't help too much, but to find the years that the grill changed, you might check out the "pictorial" link on the right side of the page. It's got pics of each year model. Hope that helps.
The '78 and '79 grill and grill shell are identical. '78s came with either round or rectangle lights - most were round except the fancier XLTs which came with rectangle lights. All '79s have rectangle lights.
When installed, the plastic grill should be even with the surrounding metal grill shell. Does yours stick out some?
First off those headlights *Aren't* Square > They are rectangular
They came out in 78 and were Standard on Ranger trim & Higher.
The custom came with round ones.
Although the cab, fenders, hood are *ALL THE SAME* from 73-79, the grill changed in 1978 to a un-interrupted one.(See my truck in my gallery)
I think the word you are looking for is Honeycomb or Egg Crate.
This grill came in 3 different styles.
Silver
Silver with chrome
Black.
If you want to have this info at you finger tips!
I suggest purchasing a CDrom version of the Ford shop manual from www.motorhaven.com.
This CDRom also includes the original brochure & wiring diagrams.
Thanks for all the help guys. The Honey grille that was on my truck was homemade. It was the outer piece from an office florecent light fixture and looked horrid. I did find out why the stock grille didn't fit right. The mounting brackets in the outer shell of the grille were strightened and made even with the back of the shell so they were flush. After a little modification, I got the stock grille to fit.
