EGR whistle

I just got my new ride, 79 F250 Super Cab long bed, 460 hotter cam great truck. Anyways, recently after my trip from Philly to Boston I developed a rather loud EGR whistle, couldn't pinpont the sound till I climbed right up on it. It drives me crazy, its not a light whistle, I can hear it over everything, what exactly does the EGR do? and can I bypass it. I don't need emissions here in MA. Can I remove it? Please help, I don't even have a radio to drown it out..

EGR whistle

Don't quote me on this but I believe EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. It lets unburnt exhaust gasses back into the carb or intake to be re-burnt. They actually make your rig run worse because of the exhaust gasses which don't burn as good as clean air

EGR whistle

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The EGR valve admits a small amount of inert (no oxygen) gas into the intake at a part throttle cruise condition to reduce the amount of oxides of nitrogen (smog) that is produced under these conditions. The inert gas reduces the combustion temperature slightly. It does not hurt performance since it is not active at moderate to full throttle unless it is not functioning properly. If you remove the EGR valve and block it off your engine will ping under part throttle cruise and you will need to re-curve the distributor. It is best all around to make sure it operates properly.

Your whistle is probably a leak either into the manifold or from escaping exhaust.

EGR whistle

I'm with Torque1st on keeping the EGR. Also, when the spacer develops a leak, the gasket can whistle like when you blow on a blade of grass held between your thumbs. If you ditch the EGR you might even have to re-jet the carb to compensate. (More fuel to help cool the cylinders.) I'd say to replace the gaskets on both sides of the spacer.

EGR whistle

Ferrwrench, temporarily remove the vacuum hose going to the EGR and plug the hose. This disables the EGR. Then you can see if the whistle is still present, and tell more precisely where it's coming from.

I disabled my EGR a couple years ago, and re-jetted the carb to prevent pinging. Like the previous posters said, you are almost sure to have pinging without the EGR.
