I have this device mounted on a newly purchased F250 1971 Camper Special (driver side kickpanel). I have no idea what this is and what it is used for. Can someone tell me? The red lights (on the device) turns on when I pull the handle up but I see or hear nothing on the truck.
I'd leave it, never know when you might need it. "Sounds" like it's operational, but no way to tell without reading voltage at trailer plug or hooking to a trailer with brakes.
I'm guessing it's an old mechanical style trailer brake controller. They used to be plumbed into the master cylinder back in the early days. Unlike todays models that just use a trigger wire off the brake light switch.
Look at the back of the unit and see if it has a small metal line coming out and going through the firewall to a brake line. "IF" you want to remove this you'll have to disconnect AND plug the line and bleed your brakes. Best to just leave well enough alone.
Does the handle move when you push your brake pedal? It should.
Yes, I had not noticed... As I press the brake pedal the handle on the brake control moves up and the red light turns on. I also saw the the metal line behind it which as mentioned before is tapped to the brake lines.
I will take your advice and just leave it alone.
