1949 Build

It has been awhile since I have posted anything or really been on the site. Lot of reasons for this, anyway.
As I never posted much in this particular sub forum.
I have a 49 F1 that I bought in Oct 05.
Went with a friend to a junkyard looking for an interior for his truck, one particular junkyard in Wamego KS had my truck on a Rollback. They said $200 and well as you can assume I said ok.
At the time I didn't even know what it was. Just an old truck. (tailgate was gone, never even really bothered to look at it, so it was an old rusty truck)
Over the past few years it has moved from KS to Iowa, had the Police and City called several times cause it dosen't run looks bad etc..., to a garage in IA, to TN.
Until recently I have been in a completely different state then the truck, if not a completely different country. Now I have it at my house so alot has changed as far as what I can do.
Over the years I have messed around with a few things. Painted the hood (rust prevention thing) took off the head, intake, busted exhaust.
Recently I have removed the hood, PS door, rear fenders, gas tank, seat, heater core, and a few other things. So it's coming along.
The problem I have it to much to do, not enough time, blah blah.
But in time I am in no big hurry.
The little "history of the truck I have" It was registered as a farm truck sticker on the KS plate was 76. It is obvious it was a farm truck, engine has been rebuilt, now seized. The rear has 2 leaf packs. The bottom pack with 11/12 springs and the top with 6 springs. The rear bumper is homemade, with hitch overdone with the welding to the frame. Spare tire mount welded to PS running board and bed. The front leaf springs are both broke, DS punched thru the frame. All in all it was not enough truck and was abused, but overall the body is not to bad, frame seems good so far. I still have not really looked it over real well.
Sorry for the rant/history/explination kinda long. Thought I would give some overall history on the truck since I have owned it and since I have not really been on here for a couple years.
Anyway I am uploading pics to post now. As a side note this truck seems to be 95% stock. (additional add on's rear bumper, spare tire)

The last move. Pulled the truck from IA to TN including I think 10 extra tires, factory exhaust off the truck pulling it, 6 enbalming tables, etc... (yes dead people tables 6 of them, make a nice work bench if you much know)

My daughter "helping" take the headlights out.

Then just more or less the recent taking apart pics.

Little here an there, I think I need some body working tools now.

Very solid original looking truck. Have fun with it. Take your time. I wouldn't have minded a bit if you had veered off the to the left a little bit on your way from IA to TN and dropped it off here. You did VERY well for $200.

Hi and welcome back! Like alot of us, you got some work to do! and it takes time and money and more time, and decisions to make! The pics are a big help for others to comment on. so keep them coming! The whole picture is overwhelming for sure, at least for me. I just keep trying to plug away at something everyday. Lots of those days seem to go by with me spinning circles and getting little to no progress, but thats where I am in "Overwhelmed" stage.
As far as what is best is up to you. Engine/tranny/axle/suspension swap. I am trying to use as much salvage yard stuff as possible because thats what I can afford. I would like to spend a little money here and there but I don't have that option now and maybe never. But I have done a lot with my salvage yard purchases and fabbed my own engine mounts and more. And it is my passion now. Good luck!
edit: and now I know what my rear fender brackets are supposed to look like!

edit#2: Hey keep ahold of that round ended tool tray pictured in the cab! That, I think, is hard to find!

I can take a better pic of the passenger side, actually have a closer one I will post now. But both of mine are bent, look as the DS it is bad. Even so it is basically a C channel with the ends bent to mount to the fender and bed with a carrage bolt like the fenders. The only difference on mine (maybe length too) was the fenders were a 1/2" socket or 7/16" bolt and the bracket was a 9/16" socket or 3/8" bolt. That was the fender side. Cut off the driverside bolt on the bed, PS is still on the bed. I can check if you want to know for sure. If you want mesurements I would suggest asking someone else though. It would be more accurate for you, well an me too.
I am not sure what all I want to do yet.
I think a 302 bored storked 347, 5 speed. Nothing crazy just a fun driver. I would like a IFS, but other then that I really don't care. Want to keep the outside stock, other then maybe whee's and tires. But I will add 2 tails/brake, turn signals safety stuff.

At any rate I got side tracked and posted without the pic anyway.
My pictures may be a little spread out (have my Camaro to tear down also) but I will keep posting them.

She is my biggest fan and I am pretty lucky for that! But ask her to get a little greasy or rust dusty?

The rounded tool tray is worth at least half of what you paid for the entire truck.

Only if I could still find a complete truck for $200.......

Welcome back, $200?, all i can say is WOW! A littel at a time , and before you know it, you will be able see the light at the end of the tunnel. I wish i could afford to do another one, and still have mine for a dailey driver, now that would be cool. But at the present time there is just no way. Ill be watching your build, and enjoying it along with you. Have fun.

I don't know about the light at the end of the tunnel yet, but I can see the light through the top of the windshield and rear window frame. Probably not a real good thing.
I'm still thinking about the tool tray, at this point I think I want to keep it.
Well see about the rest though. The engine and trans will be coming out.
I kinda want it to look mostly stock. Think the exception will be probably guages, radio (maybe).
I just think it's a cool truck the way it is, to include the heater.
Which brings me to a question. I was looking through pictures yesterday my heater core is no the passenger side firewall. I saw a picture of one on here that had the heater core lines through the middle of the firewall.
Which one is stock? Or is either. I have yet to look at mine and see if there are any numbers and what not. Just made me a little curious if it would have been stock or add on.

Good pics and good info so far. Keep us posted on your progress. Love to see the kids helping out. They will keep this crazy hobby of ours going when we're riding around in the motorized chairs with the flames on them.

Hey Joe (?),
That's actually a very solid looking truck - That seat can be salvaged
& will look real good. The inside floorboards look great - unbelievable actually. I've got a '50 & you can find fiberglass replica fenders to replace the one you are missing. I went with metal running boards - those are a little pricey so if you have one in the bed don't toss it.

That heater takes up some space - If you put in a vintage air system with heat you'll be entering the modern age - oooo....
