Water in fuel sensor.

If i remove the bowl heater and leave the harness connected to the bowl will the water in fuel sensor still work while eliminating the "bad heater, blown fuse, engine will not run" problem?

Alternate thought.
Since i want to keep the water in fuel sensor working, will simply disconnecting the heater wire from the heater (inside the bowl) do the same thing? Keep the water sensor working without allowing a bad heater to kill the truck?
