The older ones with the stamped letters in the center would be sweet too though.
This is what I am doing. I have a 89 F150 and the red plastic peace is fall off of the aluminum peace AGAIN.
So I am getting the one with the stamped letters, painting the tailgate two tone (like my truck; gray top and bottom, black in the middle) And painting the stamped part of the "FORD" gray to stand out from the black. Then pin stripping where the two paint colors meet on top and bottom of tailgate.

That will look sharp. What color pinstripe, red, white?
its a little hard to see here but the reflector broke so i found a used one. The palstic clips were broke off so i bent up some SS sheet and riveted to the tailgate holding it on. Dont use glue since the plastic expands in the summer.
When I bought my '97 XL, the tail gate was wasted. I found a used one from another '97 that was 2-tone (red w/silver center) for $100. All I did was go to Autozone and buy 2 spray cans of Dupli-Color, some primer/sealer, a can of clear and a roll of pinstripe. I masked off the silver between the tail lights and painted the rest white to match my truck. The lines don't quite match, but it's not noticable unless you really pay attention. Two years and it still looks great...total cost around $130!
At first, I thought about getting a tailgate with the aluminum panel that was broke or missing. I was planning on trying to fit a piece of polished aluminum tread-brite to cover the center. I still think that would be unique.
It's a Lund "Backdraft". I bought it NIB off eBay for $20.00.....only took one bid. I don't think they make them anymore, but I'm not certain. It's not very practical for a work truck, but it does cover up the massive dents in the top of the tailgate! Right after I installed it, I noticed that if I'm driving into a strong headwind there is enough suction created in the bed that the floor of the plastic bed liner will actually raise up several feet in the middle. In fact, it humps up so high in the middle that it sticks up above the top of the tailgate, LOL. Pretty amazing, since if you tried to lift it up off the floor with your bare hands, you can't raise it up more than about 1/2". I had to put several screws in the floor just to hold it down. The worst part is I can't throw my empty beer cans, leaves or anything light in back anymore. It sucks it right out if you're driving into the wind!
I did find those but the guy that wanted them has a 1997 which is a different cataolg at LMC, i'm not sure if the lettering is the same between 1996-1997?
Red, Cause I have red pin striping down the side of the truck where the two tone paint meets.
That's the one I was hoping you'd say, will look awesome
Avoid the LMC tail gates. I had one on my S15; it was thin metal and dented easily. Nowhere near the weight of the original. All of their panels are made overseas. Something to consider.
