Please help with V10

Im a Diesel guy and i know nothing about the V10, I just bought a 99 (built in 98) F250 4x4 with a Blown up V10. Can Someone tell me what years I can use to replace it? I found an 04 but i was told i had to use a 99 engine, Is that true? Another guy told me the EGR was the only difference, I just dont know what to believe and i dont want to buy the 04 engine if it wont work.

You can try posting your question in the V10 forum. They discuss specifically for that motor. Hope you find your answer.
