99 F-250 SD 7.3L . I have surging issues. Sounds like its coming from the EGR valve (?). It will do it untill the engine has reached normal operating temp.
I'm thinking your surge is what we call the romps. What is the temp where you are? What oil are you using? We need more information on what's going on.
Temps have been in the low 30's to upper 20's. I do plug it in at night. I am currently using Castrol oil. In the past I have always used Delo 400. I have seen a vlv cycle on the bottom of my turbo on the exhaust side.
In those temps, you need to switch to 5w-40 synthetic oil. You also need to test your GPR (glow plug relay) to make sure it is working. Have you ever changed the glow plugs?
I will let it warm-up for about 10-15 min in the morning. As I accelerate, I will hear the valve open. I will then back off and it will close. This will also happen if I am going at a steady speed. When it does I will slow down until I hear it close. Once I get to normal engine temp the problem goes away. I have not changed the glow plugs since I bought it back in 2002. I would also get these "romps" while it was warming up throughout the year. I would tap the pedal and it would stop. How would the glow plugs cause this problem?
Doesn't sound like the romps to me sounds like the EBPV(Exhaust Back Pressure Valve) engaging, if you don't want it to happen cold, you could simply unplug it, or wait until motor is up to temp. Could be a clogged EBS sensor or tube as well.
As stated above, check your EBS and tube, just replaced both of mine, and my surging problems had disappeared. Clay at riffraff has both items. Money well spent. Also my truck is high idleing like it used to when it is cold outside, Also when checking your EBS tube, make sure when you pull the tube off your manifold you check the manifold aswell, just incase there is soot collected at the fitting, just run a punch or wire or something stiff in the fitting in the manifold to make sure it is clear aswell, wont do any good to replace the EBS and tube, if it is plugged at the manifold
