Jim
well Bill that is 3 1/2 years later that you were almost 1 year old??????? You better work on your math skills.. unless you were born on leap day in a leap year? Or are you from another planet and age differently then the rest of us?

I stated that I was at the 50th anniversary (ceremony) of the attack December 7, 1991 when I noticed the Camry with the Pearl Harbor Survivor license plate frames.
Bill Pounds said: I guess you didn't hear, the war is over, it was in all the papers.
My reply to Bill Pounds was: Were you old enough to read all about it, referring to the end of the war, VJ-Day August 15, 1945 and September 2, 1945 when the documents were signed.
I was born September 9, 1944, so I was old enough, but couldn't read all about it, cuz I was 11 months old, and 7 days shy of my 1st birthday when the documents were signed.
And btw: Anyone that was in the Hawaiian Islands or in the waters thereof on December 7, 1941, is considered a Pearl Harbor survivor.
Military and civilians alike, including the 30,000 resident Japanese aliens that made up the bulk of the islands labor force, the captain and crew of the Netherlands freighter berthed in Honolulu harbor.
While west coast Japanese residents were rounded up and put in "relocation" camps during the war, only about 500 of the 30,000 Japanese aliens in the Hawaiian Islands were sent to relocation camps.
To round up 30,000 Japanese aliens, would not only have been relocation nighmare, but would have put a severe dent in the labor force, including those who worked the cane fields and at US Military installations.
And btw: It's Leyte, not Lehte. You want to go "toe to toe" with me inre to WWII history, you better start reading one hell of a lotta books.
Nice segwey eh?

Yesterday, December 7th 1941, a date...uh, er... Yesterday, stu37d typed a thread ("A bit of Naval History") in the General non Automotive forum inre to the uncanny WWII history of the destroyer USS William D. Porter (DD-579).
The USS Iowa (BB-61) was mentoned, so not only did I type a post inre to the USS William D. Porter, but on the USS Iowa as well.
It's been a long struggle for the "Pacific Battleship Center" to be awarded the USS Iowa. San Francisco, Stockton and Vallejo also wanted the ship.
The left winger San Francisco politicians nixed the Iowa being berthed there. Stockton couldn't raise the money, so it came down to Vallejo vs Los Angeles...Vallejo lost.
When I first read about this almost three years ago, I signed up as a volunteer, became a "plank owner" and offered to donate 500 books on WWII US Naval history, and my dad's WWII USN uniforms.
The Iowa was recently towed from its former location in the reserve fleet in Suisun Bay to Richmond for some repairs.
The ship is expected to be towed here in March, berthed in LA Harbor (not too far away from the SS Lane Victory), open to the public sometime this summer.

btw: This is the new Iowa, the old battleship Iowa was sunk as a target circa 1909 by the 'big guns' of US battleships, off the Atlantic coast.
I would love to come down and visit the USS Iowa so I could at least say I was on one of the Iowa class Battleships. Didn't SF get the USS New Jersey? I can't remember where its final destination is.Jim

The WWII Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien is berthed at Fort Mason, the Presidio.
Across San Francisco Bay, at the former Alameda NAS, is the museum ship USS Hornet (CV-12), a fleet aircraft carrier that served in WWII and beyond.
There are four Iowa Class battleships, all four are now museum ships:
USS Iowa (BB-61): Los Angeles / USS New Jersey (BB-62): Camden NJ / USS Missouri (BB-63): Pearl Harbor / USS Wisconsin (BB-64): Hampton Roads VA
There are four other US battleship museum ships:
USS Texas (BB-35), the only battleship extant (afloat) to have served in two World Wars: San Jacinto TX / USS North Carolina (BB-55): Wilmington NC / USS Massachusetts (BB-59): Fall River MA / USS Alabama (BB-60): Mobile Bay AL
Only other battleship extant: Pre-Dreadnought battleship HIJMS Mikasa, Admiral Togo's flagship at the Battle of Tsushima Straits during the Russo-Japanese War, is preserved in Yokohama Bay.
(sigh) Speaking of pet peeves: FTE members who "fan the flames." I could respond to your comment, but...I'm holding my tongue...for once.I like being here, don't wanna free "FTE vacation" gifted by a Super Moderator.

Sorry someone today wanted a ride and they whined the whole time. I was amazed.
