I had the studs, delete and oil cooler done after I got that code that indicates that the oil and coolant were more than 15 degree's apart in temperature. The blue smoke started approx 6-8 weeks later.

FWIW! Not sure if there is any correlation, but here is what happened to me. With help from the good folks on this forum, I recently changed turbos. The replacement was used. When I got everything back together it ran very well. The strange thing was anytime I stopped, like at a stop sign when I started rolling again I got a fairly large trail of blue smoke. At speed it was not visible. I drove it for a week with good temps, good fluid levels, good performance and no new codes. For s.... and giggles I loaded Looney tunes. Now no issues and no smoke. .. BTW no smoke before the turbo switch.

Check this! If the rings are shot, that engine would probably be puffing smoke out of the oil fill hole and/or dipstick hole like a choo choo train.

The truck does not smoke at idle unless i've just pulled off the road and then it slowly dissipates to nothing. No smoke at startup either, warm or cold. With the truck in park, oil cap removed and my hand over the fill tube opening I feel nothing or see any smoke. I switched back to conventional 15W-40 today so we'll see if that makes a difference. The tech said that there was a lot of oil in the CAC tube and intercooler so that may need to burn off first.

Got it back from one of the two local Ford stores and they said they can't find anything wrong with the truck despite the obvious blue smoke upon acceleration. Here is what they wrote...

"ROADTEST FOR SMOKE, CONFIRMED MINOR PUFF WHEN STEPPING INTO THROTTLE, CHECKED TURBO FINS, GOOD, AIR FILTER GOOD, CHECKED BOOST, MAKES 24PSI, NO FAULTS, CHECKED FOR CODES, P0402 P0404 DUE TO EGR DELETE, CHECKED OIL COOLER OPERATION, AT LIMITS BUT WORKING, NO FAULT FOUND, ISSUE MAY BE MADE WORSE BY NO CAT OR MUFFLER, NOTE - CAC TUBE WORN AT TURBO"

Any thoughts?

yup a small amount of smoke is normal when applying throttle. the cat hides the bluk of that smoke on a stock tuned truck. if your unhappy with that then return your truck to 100% stoock and see if it still does it.

I've had straight pipe exhaust on the truck for over 4 years and never seen much of anything. It's gotten dramatically worse in the last 2 months. Maybe try another dealership?

Great advice here, I will give you my observations, my truck was puffing a good cloud of blue smoke only after warming up while taking off from a red light. I too had no smoke at start up or otherwise , just when it warmed up a few miles down the road after sitting at a red light it would turn green I would take off and puff, blue then it would clear up.

Fast forward to today it no longer does it, the only thing that I did that could attribute to it not doing , I replaced the turbo with a powermax, after doing my bpd oil cooler. I was assuming that it was the turbo seals that we're going south. And just decided to replace it, I have yet to tear down the old one to check it out.

But when I was taking stuff off, I had a lake of oil in the boost tubes, so it could be what cheezit is saying.

As far as the dealer it looks like they are just telling you they don't know what is causing it, I guess that is better than condemning something just to make a buck off you.

I'm going to wait and see if it clears up, no money for a new turbo at this time.

Have you pulled the down pipe to see if the turbo is the issue

if it is theres also a writeup in the tech folder to do a compleate rebuild
this might be alot less than a new turbo

How much movement is there in the downpipe? I'd remove it to take a look but i'm worried that i'd have problems getting it reattached?
