Exclamation A Few Simple Questions

all these questions apply to my 1988 ford bronco. 302 w/ c-6 trany.

1. i have a smog pump, i dont want it bc the bearings have gone bad and make a loud screech....can i take it off and not mess anything up?

2. does anyone know an air filter better than k&n air filters, i want a cool air intake but i want one better than k&n

3. i have two headers that i found in the junkyard, and one of the tubing is (im guessing) is the next size down, basically its just a little bit smaller then the the first one....will that cause any problems?

A Few Simple Questions

to answer question #3
I would not want to put that smaller header in my ride. You should match all parts up, most everywhere on your truck, especially under the hood. The smaller header would create more backpressure than the larger meaning four cylinders would be stronger than the other four, sounds like a good way to screw some stuff up really well.

Cool A Few Simple Questions

i have talked to this Rade Spasojevic who had removed all that crap from his car including the vapor canister and sent the fuel return line back to the gas tank. i hate to be the one to speak for him but he says that it runs just the same.

A Few Simple Questions

Removing the smog pump effectively removes the fresh air injection to the EGR system and to the catalytic converter. Without the fresh air pumped to it, the cat. will never heat up and burn off the excess crud that its supposed to and your O2 sensor will begin to see this change and try to compensate until it dies too. Not sure how badly it will affect the EGR since there is also vacuum present in that system but in each case the fresh air is introduced to increase oxygen levels to make the burn process more efficient in removing excess crap that doesn't burn off in the regular combustion cycle. If you aren't worried about emmissions laws, it won't hurt anything. Gasoline powered internal combustion engines ran just fine without all that junk for a long time before they started adding it.

Not sure what you are looking for when you say "better" than K&N. The FIPK actually allows warmer air into the intake than the stock setup but the drop-in filter reduces airflow restriction by a considerable amount without sacrificing the cooler outside air.

Matched headers! No matter what. BamaBronco is right on.

Small tube headers will increase your low end torque which is exactly what you want if you are towing or four wheeling through the mud in the woods behind your house.

Even if you don't remove the catalytic converter, it won't necessarily "hurt" anything but the thing to remember is that the computer will try to compensate for those odd sensor readings by altering fuel/air ratios. As to whether this will cause any long term or permanent damage, I have no idea. Nor do I know of any way to "fool" the computer.
