Hi there, Im new to the forum and I had a couple of tech questions I was hoping to get some help with. I have an 01 excursion 7.3 that I bought used.
Frist question. since I bought it used I did not get te owners manual and I can not seem to find the location for the cigarette lighter fuse. I found the fuse box but I dnt see any blown fuses in there. My OBD2 plug has no power either. I was told that it shares the lighter fuse. does anyone know the fuse #?
second question. I need to replace the limited slip clutches in the rear end. I do gear work all the time at work, so the actual clutch swap shoulnt be a problem. But I was wondering if it is possible to tell if I have a two or three pinion limited slip from the vin. looking on here I found some info on identifying the ratio but nothing about the pinion count. Im just trying to avoid pulling the cap just to find out, because the parts will have to be ordered. so I would have to drain it just to refill it just to have to drain it again.
Thanks in advance, any help is apriceated.

Stroke......did you see Fox news online today ?......they found a new species of monkey in Asia.......the Elvis monkey......no kidding !!!.....check it out.....your avatar made me think of it......no more thread hijacking sorry......
Thank You very much Powerstroke72 one problem down. Now my evolution works again, someone had a 15amp fuse in there instead of a 20. I guess thats what you get buying a used vehicle.
I would post a very specific question thread with the subject "Is my LS rear end a two or three pinion?" That'll get it noticed by the guys on there that would know for sure. That way your question won't get lost.
I don't understand the 2 or 3 "pinion" question.......there is only 1 pinion in any rearend?? and what does the pinion gear have to do with the clutches....they are in the rear with the side and spider gears
There is the pinion you are thinking of, Neil, that is the pinion gear of the ring and pinion set.
Then there is the pinions in the carrier that are shafts that the spider gears rotate on. Two pinion carrier is one shaft, 3 pinion is a casting with three shafts, 4 pinion diff, etc.
The open differential gas versions of the Excursions all came with 2 pinion differential carriers. The diesel versions are spec'd with a three pinion design and three spider gears.
And yes, I agree the terminology usage stinks. Makes too much confusion.
Yes, I was refering to the LS pinions not the pinion in the ring and pinion set. The terminology does suck. I will start a new thread tonight when I get home from work The EX is the old ladys DD so I will have to wait for her to get home, so I can get the vin.
Thanks again guys.
Ok......I was a GM service tech for 15 years.....before I decided to get a mechanical engineering degree.....rebuilt plenty of rears.... GM's were weak......I have never heard that terminology ! what part of the country are you in ?.......for me......in the carrier......side gears....the axles spline into these........spiders gears.....between the side gears and held by the pin.....not pinion........Since I haven't had the cover off my 10.5 LS.....show me some pics of the difference....I have never seen a rearend with 3 or 4 spider gears and 2 pins.....Ford....Dana or Chevy....please show me if you have pics !.....can't imagine 3.....4 with 2 pins in a large carrier is a good idea....never saw it though
