Using a gear too tall

That grinding/rumbling noise is telling you that you need to downshift. I don't know that it hurts anything, but it goes away when you downshift.

my auto teacher brought up a good point-

could be that the tranny isn't spinning fast enough and i'm hearing it cuz it isn't lubricating itself enough.

Sounds more like the engine complaining though.

In any case i'm using first now.

Those old Deeres are cool. I saw a site once where a guy was rebuilding his model R and showed a pic of his young daughter (probably about 5 years old) standing next to a connecting rod, they were about the same height! Did you know that those big 2 cyls had a gasoline V4 starter motor? It help warm the collant in the block as well as spin it over. Very cool old stuff indeed.

i guess i have lived a deprived life thus far. The only Jhon Deere i have driven is the lawn tractors whith a 5hp motor
