I got my new expedition the other day. Its got 150 grand on it. I had a misfire but fixed that. I noticed when I got it that it had a shake from 35-45 mph. The transfer case leaks a little I noticed. I checked u joints and they seem good. Could it maybe be a tire? Wheel bearings have a little roar too them but the shake seems to come from the rear end. This is my first expedition. I'm used to my broncos haha. Anyone have the same issue. Or maybe a possible direction to start at? Thanks in advance!
Check your ball joints. Lowers tend to go away first and then the uppers. Also, check your tire wear pattern. If you are starting to get ripples inside or out, it's probably a good place to strart.
A little update..tire rotation di not help and I did a little experimenting. From 35-45 I get the worst of the shaking if I'm in od and press the acceleratoe down enough to where it wont shift from overdrive. But if the truck is driving in cruise control on a flat road I have no shake.

Again, what year are we talking about? And which engine?
FYI, the transmission won't actually shift into OD until 44 mph.
What rpm are you turning when this happens?
That would indicate if it has somehow shifted early into OD.
Lugging down in high gear with heavy throttle opening will tax the coils and plugs You could try locking out the OD and see if the condiction goes away.

BTW, you OD light isn't flashing, is it?
Its a 97 with a 5.4 and 4x4. Its not in od your right but it was in the highest gear possible. My od light isn't flashing. By doin a lot of experimenting and research I used the cruise control at 40 when the shaking is its worst and I held down the cruise button on my steering wheel and the vibration went away completely
So basically my theory is torque converter shudder. Although this is my first expedition I just don't know. I rotated the tires and even put my buddies brand new tires and wheels on it and still a shake. It does have bad wheel bearimgs, and the transfer case is leaking but not bad. I keep my eye on my fluids so it never gets low..
Do you think its torque converter shudder? If so what's the remedy? Thanks for your response! Sorry for beimg slow to answer I work 12 hour days on 2nd shift
You can test for this the next time the shudder happens by applying just enough pressure to the brake pedal to turn on the brake lights without actually engaging the brakes. The TC lockup is supposed to disengage when the brakes are applied.
Mike,
I had a similar shutter with my 99 Expy, when the tranny shifted into O/D. It felt like driving over "BOTS" dots as if you were coming to a stop sign warning across the road. More like a rumble.
I had the ATF flushed at a local shop and it helped a bit but it still didn't go away completely.
I finally removed a quart and added a quart of Slick 50. I know many people don't believe in additives but it worked for me.
I can't find Slick 50 any longer in the atf additive, so I went to Lucas and it's worked fine since.
Good luck.
It doesn't sound like TC shudder to me. TC shutter usually occurs just when the transmission shifts into OD and lasts only a few seconds. A full tranny fluid change (including the fluid in the TC) solved the shudder in my tranny.

When you say you held down the cruise button, which button are you referring to?
