My First Tow!

Owned the truck for quite some time now and finally got to tow something ~ bought a 26' caterpillar trailer for a new backhoe & skidsteer purchase, however they were both delivered a week before the trailer came in so I had to move it about an hour and half out of town. The trailer weighed in around 6500# empty and I was shocked... it really felt like no weight whatsoever. The brakes still stopped on a dime. A couple days later one of the guys on our site moved the trailer with his '92 F-350 and he went on and on about how bad it pulled (his truck struggled). Amazing how far the 1/2-tons have come.

Gotta say, this towing thing could be quite addictive. Picked up another new trailer this week - a 16' enclosed Doolittle - and that was just a much fun (a little bit more awkward than the flatbed but still fun!).

Love this truck a little more each day ;-)

6k lbs trailer empty? Wow. Trailer alone put you about 1200lbs from reaching your towing capacity.

Ummm... no. The max load is either 9,200 or 9,700 (I can't recall off the top of my head)... but definitely NOT 7,700. For some reason the XLT has a higher capacity than any other model.

It is a heavy duty trailer for a BACKHOE (note mention of purchase of backhoe) that will be pulled with a HD truck when loaded.

But thanks!

Forgot you had a 3.73 rear. No need to get feisty. Glad you're enjoying the truck.

Correct me if I am wrong but the trailer in the pictures is your new trailer, if so then 6500 lbs would be just about right. But I can't see your F-150 pulling that trailer with your track loader (9K+ lbs) on it much less the backhoe (min 15K lbs). I think if you are going want to move that track loader around a bunch you are going to need a lighter trailer or a heavier truck. Now don't get wrong, the F-150 can eye popping things, some of the tows and loads I have done have left some of the old timers shaking their heads but we can only go so far with the loads before things break. Please check all your weights and remember to figure in your attachments and fuel (they add to the overall weight), it's better that you know before you are on the road. Towing can be a ton of fun but you got to do your home work before the DOT does. Chris

No, I just moved the HD trailer since it arrived after the two machines. I can't pull it loaded - I believe it is something like 30k lbs loaded. I wish! Lol. I was just noting that pulling the 6500# was easy as hell. Really wanna test her limits with something closer to 9,200#

Good for you, Melody! I, actually my wife, towed a fully loaded enclosed trailer with a FULLY loaded truck over the summer when we moved. She didn't like it, but she also has never towed and doesn't like driving my truck. It pulled pretty well, I thought. I bought a new utility trailer and towed my '71 Land Cruiser to storage a month ago. I wish I towed every day...so, I know how you feel.
