1979 Carb Question?

I have a question about my 1979 F250 with a 400. The motor was rebuilt and has approx 1000 miles on it has been bored .030 over with a RV cam. Yesterday I installed a Edlebrock intake and a brand new Edelbrock 850 4 barrel. My question is...will the stock fuel pump work or do I need to try to locate a higher volume fuel pump? Or should I go with a electric fuel pump. This my daily driver so I don't want to go too extreme with it. Thanks for any help!

If it was able to feed the engine before the rebuild, it should work fine now. Even if the new carb has larger fuel bowls, once they are filled, the engine still only used the same amount of fuel.

IIRC, the stock fuel pump produces more fuel pressure than Eddies can handle. Im sure someone will chime in soon...

more fuel pump questions

Ok got the truck running. Carb is preset from the factory. Truck runs great but when getting on it acts like its starving for fuel. I have a large inline fuel filter on it and when its at a idle the filter has a very small amount of fuel in it and the gas coming into it is a very weak and small amount. I was thinking that filter should stay almost full of fuel while it is running. Am I right thinking that. Is it possible the fuel pump is weak?

You'll need to tune the carb to fit your engine. If its leaning out when you mash the pedal, adjust the accelerator pump for a bigger squirt.

You'll always have air in the fuel filter. No indication of how well the fuel pump works.

A engine like you described only needs a 600cfm carburetor.

Your pump could be weak but on mine it seems like it always takes awhile to fully work the air out of the filter and have it completely full when I change to a new one. You could hook up a gauge to it and see what the pressure is.

Been playing around with it I just cant get any fuel into the filter bought a new one slapped it on and still hardly any fuel going into it. Maybe i will throw a new fuel pump on to see if that fixes it. I just put a new gas tank and all new lines on but never put a new pump on.

I was doing some reading and low fuel rate and low pressure will affect the performance so that is why i was looking at the fuel pump.

I'd just play with the adjustments a little and if that doesnt get it right then look at the fuel pump.

You say you just put on new lines.....did you replace the metal lines and the rubber sections? If so did you use clamps where the rubber line and metal lines join? If not the pump could be sucking in air instead of fuel. If you didn't replace the rubber line they could be dry cracked and cause air to be sucked in.....if soft they can collapse and cause the pump to not be able to pump fuel.

Have you checked the float levels. They are not always set correctly from the factory. If they are set too low, you will go lean at the end.
