If the light does not come on when you first start the engine then the bulb is blown.
There is really no easy way. You have to take the dash apart to get to the small bulbs. In my opinion once you have the dash apart you are better off replacing all bulbs in the dash good and bad....
Try <a href="http://fordcustoms.com/display.php?file=./techarticles/tech10/index.html&i=1">this website</a>. Not sure what year your is, but either way it probably involves removing most of that part of the dash...
Odd...my CEL does not come on on start up, nor does my brake lamp come one when the emergency brake is on. I have 35K miles. Any other possible causes?
Pain in the butt. I was impressed at how much easier it would be on my Stang when I went to change the instrument cluster bezel.
The pics on the website that brianjwilson posted look pretty accurate to my truck.
Does anyone know what bulb is used for the small light that illuminates the headlight settings? I got it out, but I don't see a number. It is a tiny bulb, with a green plastic coating mounted on a black plastic tower. Tough to describe, but maybe someone knows.

I don't know about the CEL, but the brake light could be caused by the switch for the ebrake. In my '98 it is mounted to the floor/firewall, right where the top of the Ebrake pedal rests when it is not set. When you push the pedal, the top comes up, and the switch is supposed to spring up and close, lighting the light. I played with it for a bit and could tell that it wasn't contacting exactly right. I sprayed some WD40 for lack of any contact cleaner, then played with the switch by hand a bunch till it seemed reliable. Then I hit the ebrake on and off a bunch of times. Light works!
Either way, I would investigate the switch before the bulb, cause the switch is easy to get to while the bulbs are a pain in the butt.
