I've got a Stihl MS270 -- great saw, but the chain brake just locked up.
I dug out the manual, and it's no help. It DID say that periodic professional adjustment was a maintenance item. I may eventually take it in, but I'm hoping that somebody here can give me a little info on how it works.
I also found out that I'm supposed to replace the drive gear periodically. Who'd a thunk it? I've gone through a few chains, but it loos like new to me. (They say to replace it every 2 chains).
I wonder if I have anything on my shelf as far as Stihl. I have a 290 model. I probably have to service my brake too. Although I will have to check it out and get back to you.
I honestly have never had to adjust a Stihl chain brake. I've had a few apart and have never even seen an adjustment on it. It's just a cam with springs that's actuated with the chain brake lever. By the way im a Stihl silver certified tech.
Thanks for the input nz. I actually did get it straightened out.
I was fooling with it, and found that it wasn't that hard to disassemble. It had gotten jammed up with crud somehow, and it worked fine after I cleaned it up.
That's what I get for reading manuals . That same manual would also have me believe that I have a cold weather setting -- not true. I even checked with the local dealer, and there is no such thing shown in the IPB.
