the 5.0's dead

Well i am tired of my 302 and it had just started rattleing on me so i have started to take it apart and i am preaty much waiting on a engine lift to remove it. my problem ia that i would much rather put into it a 351EFI, but ford does not have a EFI 351 for that year andi herd that my year of bronco used the banks firering program. i have herd that i could cut the injector wires and cross them over to fit the program but i am not atal comftorble with that. has anybody swapped from a 302FI to a 351FI in an 87bronco???? i am just talking about the wireing.

on a different note i am slightly considering swaping to a 4bb instead. but i hate the idea of getting rid of the efi. is there any kind of carb setups that dont have much splash around problems??? that is really all that i worry about.

thanks in advance.

I did the swap in an 87 F150. I used the stock 302 computer and wiring harness. No cut wires at all. Works fine, as long as you use the proper firing order. If you do the swap I would recommend using the proper 351 computer as the 302 computer runs pretty rich on the 351.

when you say the proper firing order do you mean swaping around the injector connections??? how hard was it to do that? i only ask becasue i have no clue how long it would take me or the difficulty, would i just time it out the the distributor firing order? thanks for the quick reply loudford!

I would suggest getting a complete EFI 351W if you attemp this swap. The little piece parts that are different from the 5.0 to the 5.8 will nickel and dime you to death. Yes, the 302 wiring harness will work just fine on the 351W, Although you will have to remove the upper intake to plug in the fuel injectors. Don't mess with rewiring the injector firing order. With bank-fire EFI, it doesn't matter anyway. Just make sure that the igniton cable firing order is correct and you'll be fine. Also do yourself a big favor and acquire a 351W computer. It will run on the 302 unit, but it won't be right. Gas mileage and driveability will likely suffer, or even worse, it may go lean under full throttle and detonate. That's a heck of a way to remodel your pistons. They don't work nearly as well with windows in them. You can probably get one for $100 or less exchange at Autozone or the like. If the EFI 5.8 wasn't available in '87, get one for an '88.

I also have a question on how hard it would be to put a 351efi in my 77 F-100? It has a 302 in it now with carb.?

Like Rage said, leave the injector wiring as it is because it is bank fuel injection, just make sure the ignition is hooked up for proper firing order. I used an 88 351.

I ran mine for a year and a half on 302 computer and it never ran lean or detonated, spark plugs read rich, and it smoked sometimes. But there was around 120k miles on it when I put it in. Man I loved that engine, took a lot of abuse without complaining. Now I'm pulling it out to put in my Ranger.

Racerdave, I think there's a tech article on putting an EFI 460 into a 73-79 pickup, you would need to do the same things for wiring and fuel pumps, just a different engine. It would almost be easier to do this with a complete donor vehicle.

with this swap i have also decided to go to headman headers along with fdual flowmaster 50 series cazt back system. i was wondering if headman headers make there chasis headers shorter on the drivers side for crossover perposes? i aske becasue that would make the exsahst swapp so much easier
