Im looking at trading my 2001 F-150 supercrew 4x4 5.4 with 191xxx miles for a 1999 F-350 supercrew 4x4 dually with a 7.3 , 238xxx miles and 6" lift. What are some things I need to look for and check out on the truck? Needing a bigger truck to haul with and this will be my daily driver. Any info would be appreciated.
Big tires kill trannys, has it been rebuilt? I would make sure you can start it cold and make sure it does crank over without issue. Also look for excessive smoke at start up. Black=injectors white=glow plug
After the truck is at running temp like after the test drive open oil fill cap and watch for excessive blow by. If you see oil spitting at you walk away.
Cam position sensor replacement and check the oil pan for rust. Thats an expensive job that requires an engine pull to replace.
Should give you a good starting point, Im sure you will get a lot more tips too.
The truck was suppose to have had engine and tranny rebuilt 130k miles ago. The truck will be used to pull a stock trailer and hay trailer. Would I be better off getting a 6.0? Im wanting to stay under $15k and wanting a diesel.
That lift and a trailer aren't going to go together at all, also if that drivetrain crapped out at 108K miles it sounds like it is overdo to be done again. The difference between your trade and that truck shouldn't be much more than a few thousand dollars IMO.
You can find some very nice '95-'97's with the 7.3L for under $15K. with half those miles or less.
My only hang up with the 97 and under trucks is I need a 4 door and I love the '99 and newer 4 doors. Be be 100% honest I have no clue of what Im wanting. I just know has to be 3/4 or 1 ton,4 door, and 4x4. Some guys locally have been saying get the V10. I love the look of a lifted truck but Ive had several and always swear Ill never own another. Does the V10 pull anything like the 7.3 ps?

I agree. If that thing went through an engine tranny rebuild at 108k dont walk, run away. That thing has had a hard life.
There are plenty of decent trucks out there just takes time to weed through them all. Took me a year and a half to find a decent 7.3 that I was willing to buy.
From what I hear the V10 will pull what you need but MPG is horrible. Also it has spark plugs and doesnt rattle.
What kind of fuel mileage can I expect from a 7.3 4 door 4wd truck? I was told that it will see 10-12 mpg on a good day and a v-10 would be the same. Im just going by what people have told me. I know my '91 7.3 in an ambulance gets pretty decent mpg like up around 15-16. My 5.4 is only getting 13-14 mpg, and doesnt have near the power I need.
Our V10s at work get 6-8. Granted they are loaded but not too heavy.
Depends on driver too, Im sure our guys beat up on them and you would be driving a little more carefully since its yours.
I get mid teens in my 7.3, its crew cab longbed 4x4 and has a 6'' lift and 33s. I do more city driving then highway but expect low 20s unloaded.....if I granny drive it. I do get better MPG then my neighbors new Hemi 4x4 crew cab Ram.
