I am curious of how to determine what is causing my ABS liht to be on all the time? Anyone have a way of doing this or is it process of elmination? I think I will start w/ the rear b/c is seems that whenever I'm on the brakes alittle heavier than normal they lock up first...I guess it could be b/c there is no weight back there though. Anyways, let me know your thoughts
The ABS system has it's own processor. Many hand-held code scanners are available that will read the ABS specific codes. I would take it to a shop with the proper tool and see why the light is on and do the repairs myself if possible. Another option would be to check Amazon or local parts store and buy a scanner that has ABS functions if the budget allows. Although they tend to be the upper scale models, there are not terribly expensive.
My ABS came on one time, brakes acted all weird, couldnt figure it out, pulled the ABS sensor out of the rear differential, had tons of metal all over it. Cleaned it off, put it back in, then shortly later while towing a loaded horse trailer, some chunks of ring gear came flying through the rear diff cover.....ckeck your reat ABS sensor.....lol
Check the rear ABS sensor on top of the differential housing...fairly common problem. Also check for moisture in the connector and the associated wire loom. Be aware that when you replace the sensor (if that is the problem...or get rid of the moisture and clean the connector) that the light will not go off right away...if the problem is corrected you should have the light go off after a short drive around the block. Good luck.
That happened to me recently and it was the wheel speed sensor going bad which disabled the ABS system, which turned the light on. And when I would get on the brakes hard it would lock up the tires because the ABS system was disabled.
Mine came on and i took it to the dealer. They said that my break light plug at the pedal wasent pluged in all the way. I was playing with the pedal hight control prior to this.
This is especially fun while in tow haul when towing a 35 ft 11k camper with your family riding along in cruise control and it trips. Not only does it kick you out of cruise control but the sudden jerk and lights on the dash scare the crap out of you
