2002 7.3 Hard Start Issue
I am looking at an 2002 FX4 (or something similar) 7.3 Super Duty that seems to have been through a few owners over the past years and one thing that has followed it via (a friend who is a dealer looked it up) seems to be this "hard start" issue. It was discovered initially a few years ago - per a dealership but even when I started it, it seemed like the engine was hard to turn over - almost like the batteries were low - but they were not. When my friend researched and said it was a hard start issue - he couldnt' tell me what that is, has anyone heard of this year having a hard start issue - is this something that would make you not buy the car based on the possibility it would lead to bigger issues?
But since you say it spins slow. Starter and cables & their connections are the most overlooked. These trucks will have cables that look to be non corroded but have oxidation that will cause it to turn over slow. It will look fine.
I have also seen cables that look fine on the ends but will be full of corrosion when you pull back the insulation. You can usually find it with a ohm meter though.
I am sure a mechanic can do all these things you mention on a car purchase inspection (I think).
Those things you mention don't seem like super high dollar items - although glow plugs seem like they could be - or injectors seem expensive.
It also seems like the 7.3 engine is relatively rock solid and this starting issue should be able to be resolved. Thanks again, but if you think of anything that I can check please let me know.
