Hello, new here. I recently purchased an 86 bronco II with about 104k miles on it for 450 bucks. I use it as my daily driver with my mustang as my nice car.
I used the 4 wheel drive quite a bit this winter with no problems at all. Today I went to engage 4 wheel drive while sitting in my driveway and nothing happens. I pressed the button, no light and no click (from the relay). I read up a bit on this problem and removed the motor on the transfer case and cleaned up the internals. I reinstalled it, still the same.
If any of you fellas have an idea of what this is, please let me know.
I pulled the motor again tonight, went through it again, reassembled and installed and same results. Ive done extensive searching on a few sites and all points to this motor. Could it be anything else?
i'm having the same problem....i havent cleaned mine yet. if cleaning it doesnt help i was thinkng about trying to find the actual relay and see if it burned out.

If I were you I would start by confirming that the motor is even getting power to it. Simple enough to do....all you really need is a test light and maybe someone to press the button for you. If the motor is NOT getting any power then you will know that it is an electrical problem further up the line and you can just trace the wire all the way up to the switch making sure that everything in between is in good condition and working properly (wires, relay, etc) Start with the basic stuff....find out how far down you are getting power...and if you ARE getting power to the motor (which you probably aren't because I would think that the light on the 4x4 button would still light up) then you may have a bad motor and you can go from there.
The 4x4 light will not light until it senses at the case that its in 4x4 high. I would hear my '89 click at the control box behind the driver's seat behind the side panel. Could you hear the click before? Check all the fuses related to it under the dash and at the fuse block under the hood.
Yes I could hear the click before. Does not even click now. I get the brief lights flashing 1 time like I always did before as I start the vehicle (I assume a bulb test or something). I checked fuses in the fuse box and that appears to be ok. What about the module? I pulled that to look at it and I dont even see the red led light up.
On my '89 the control module had a test button (doesn't say test) on the side somewhere that I think cycled the module and the light would flash or stay on for a few seconds.
LOSE THE AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUBS!!!! The manual ones are way better and cheaper to maintain and fix if something goes wrong. I would say that the auto hubs are your biggest problem. Sorry for speakin my mind, but I learned from experience.
These are a real trip ! I went through mine ("87 electronic shift) Motor was clean inside except for carbon ring at brushes. Cleaned that and lubed the end bushings & decided to test the motor before I put it back in. Hooked to a 12 v. power supply it still won't turn ! No hot spots in casing, magnets are strong, armature is bright & clean, no hot spots and no solder or plastic slung around inside case. Any ideas?
Armature doesn't appear as if it would have open coil but it
won' t even buzz or hum.
Naked duck posted a while back and suggested he had the techniques to change to manual shift. Did anybody get that info ?
Had an 89 BII that I fixed just before selling. I beleive it was where it attaches to t/case on the motor unit, there was an overide bushing that disentigrated. Beleive it was about 1/4-3/8" diameter. The motor didn't know to return direction. I made a new one out of some plastic (can't remember exactly).
I had disasembled that motor several times and never had 4x4 working the 10 years I had it. Figured it out just before selling. It worked just fine then.
