I finally got it going

I finally got my rebuilt 390 out on the road and it was almost a completely joyous experience, the first problem, was that my throttle spring became lodged and it made my throttle stick a 3/4 throttle which thankfully was easily fixed. My second and most highly embarrassing factor was that my alternator shorted out and my battery was dead when I filled it up at the local esso, thankfully for me a good friend of mine worked there and the had one of those new fangled boosting machines which actually started the fresh 390 with relative ease. Now I have some questions to ask you guys
1, Is there any logical reason that my new 390 would use an 1/8 of a tank of gas to go 4.5 miles into town with a two barrel and no real hills to speak of?

2. What would make it idle on only 4 cylinders occasonally?

3, If my problems are not solved soon do any of you know how to wire in one of those 1 wire ch**y alternators?

4, after the initial run in I changed the oil, now do i go at regular intervals (about 3000 miles or less) or should I go about a 1000 miles before I change it again.?

New enignes use a lot of gas don't they? Once you get your electrical problem cleared up you should be able to figure out your missing problem. As for oil changes:

I do it

After the 30 minute break in
100 miles later
1000 miles later
then start the 3000 mile intervals.

I actually change mine every 2000 miles but it doesn't get driven like grandmas crown vic. It needs it by then.

Congradulations on you new FE. You will get the little bugs worked out. It will just take a little time..

Congrats!

As for the alt, I'd stick with the Ford setup, just make sure ALL the wires leading to it are good and connected to the right spot. I found that a simple mulitmeter is a great tool for these kind of things and can be had for about $10.

I'd check the dist to see if the bushings are worn and then go ahead and convert over to pertronix for about $60.

Look at the carb and see if the float is right, then read the plugs to see if it's running too rich. Mine did a simular thing when new, but it's still new so I don't know what 'normal' mileage is for mine yet.

I use the $1.09 oil for the break in, because I change it so often, Don't forget the filter is important to replace because you can get some small metal and maybe some gasket material/sealer in there.

Cheap insurance.

I have two of those booster boxes and they are great! Worth the price the first time you need it!
