What transmissions are out there for a FE block that offer an overdrive. Right now i get about 1500rpm @30, 2000rpm @40, 2500 @55, and 3000@ 60, and my tired old engine can't take those rpms for any sustained time. I'm looking for a manual but I will go with an AOD C6 if that's the only option in my price range. I know the toploaders are great transmissions and plentiful but they don't offer overdrive. There's also the TR3550/TKO but they seem to be WAY out of my price range. what other transmission/ adapters are out there? AM i overlooking any of my options ie; 2 speed rear end, seperate overdrive units?
If your engine can't handle 3k, it's not going to handle overdrive at all, in my opinion.
You're probably better off hunting up some taller tires and rebuilding that motor.
When I bought my '69 they had stuck a 4-speed out of an '88 f-150 in it. That seemed to work fine, and cruising rpms were fairly low (iirc around 2500 at 60). I never looked too close at what they had to do to get it to match up though. I don't think I want to know now as the truck has become my parts machine.
I am told that all toploader's built after about 72 or so is an overdrive. These are not condsidered by most people to be a true toploader because of this. I have one. They look identicle but are only a 3 speed with overdrive.
