SD to MAF EFI options

My '92 has the SD EFI system. Been looking at MAF conversions. Thanks to forum members, I've found the necessary leads to doing a "factory" upgrade. I have found "one stop shopping" kits with all necessary parts for the conversion.

Then I came across Mass-Flo EFI. They offer a full replacement kit originally designed for carb to EFI engines. As a variant, the offer the kits for factory EFI engines as well. I've known about them for some years now, but only ever considered them for a carb to EFI swap.

Has anyone tried one of these? Wondering if there are any performance or mod advantages over the Ford MAF system. Seems like the MF kit would be more friendly to engine mods. Some future considerations include a 331 stroker and/or a supercharger. If I were to go with a Roots, I'd definitely need to rethink the factory set-up.

Thoughts?

For the price of a Mass-Flo system you could do a junkyard MAF conversion with Ford parts(~$200), add full tuning capability with a Moates Quarterhorse(~$350), and do an awfull lot with the engine.

I've never heard if this. I'll read up on it. I might come back at you with some questions.

Thanks!

Curious...how much is the Mass-Flo system? I think mine from IST was ~$1500 for harness, computer, O2 sensor, air sensor, and a transmission controller

The Moates Quarterhorse system is favored by the Mustang crowd as a way to modify the stock ECU for tuning options. You use the Quarterhorse system to plug into factory diagnostic points on the ECU and you can modify almost all of the ECU settings. The kicker is that only certain ECUs are well supported by the system.

I was told the best systems are A9x...those are the ones that have been reverse engineered the most.

I have been opted to doing this but cant fathom spending over $300 for the stuff.

Where is a tutorial to get all junkyard parts? I have access to one of the biggest ford junkyards in Colorado. Pulling parts would be easy but I would need to know what computer and everything is needed.

Links would be great! I have searched countless threads with no real info other than people throwing opinions

Excellent question, I hope someone will provide a comprehensive list. I'm looking forward to it.

I wouldn't mind helping you make up the list of everything needed and getting it done. I live in CoS and just went through a SD to MASS Air upgrade. I also like what you said about one of the biggest Ford junkyards in CO, that makes my mouth water. I have pages and pages of notes, wiring diagrams, and information. If I had to do it over again, I think I could get there by doing it this way.

Just reach out if you want my help, would be happy to assist.

the wrecking yard harness or going this route RJM Injection Tech — Welcome would be the way to go.

you really need to weight the bennys of MAF over SD in regards to your motor build. If you currently have a 5.0 and need more power swaping to a 5.8 is a drop in swap and will run SD fine. my 5.8 build runs very well on SD and would only need MAF if i plan on going with a stroker build. figure a couple grand to do that motor justice. then you gotta replace the drivetrain weak links due to the power. there is a guy known as SeattleFSB on fsb.com he did a 408 build on his bronco. the guy has probably 10grand into the total build from motor to tranny to efi and rear diff upgrade etc.. but its a sweet rig

Not entirely true. There are MANY things besides a stroker that would require a MASS Air system. Replacing the cam is one example.

There are SD friendly cams. You can't have a crazy lope, but you can still have a much better cam then stock.

and the stock roller 5.8 cam isnt bad out of the box either. running 1.7 rockers is also an option.

Very nice man! Thanks for the heads up. I am still pondering the idea of doing the swap.

I am not wanting to build a radical stroker street engine. Just an average daily driver for back and forth to work and groceries. I dont know entirely if the MAF swap would be worth the work.

Would be curious to know what cams are compatable with SD. I cant find anything listed specifically for SD engines.
