Water Injection

I came across water injection on a couple of sites and have been reading up on it. I found Snow Performance and this is what they had to say in the performance section.

The extra power produced depends heavily on the concentration of methanol used and the volume injected. Typical power gains in 5.9L and larger applications with a 50% mixture of water/methanol are 50-100 WHP and a 100-150ft lb-ft increase in torque.

This doesn't seem like it could be true or its to risky to install on an engine cause I've been reading through these idi sites and haven't found much on it. If you could get 100hp for $400 wouldn't everyone have one.

What do you guys think is it worth it or is it a scam?

I personally won't be injecting water into mine, it doesn't take much for bad things to happen.

I have a snow performance water/meth kit on my truck. I haven't played with it much yet, but with regular washer fluid (not winter blend) pulling a heavy grade empty I ping really bad in the upper rpm's I've stopped using it until I look in to timing differences that will help. There is a definite increase in power when you flip the switch though! I'm also turbo'd and i'm sure that is a contribution to the ping as well.

I was thinking of using it more to clean the engine and keep the temp down. I don't really want to turn it up and see how much hp I can get out of it.

Not really sure yet. I bought it with the kit installed and have only been able to drive it for about 3 weeks. I haven't had any time to really look at it. I believe you can run straight water without any adverse effects, so I doubt that's the issue. I believe the methanol has a lower flash point and will ignite sooner. So I'm thinking the timing will need to be adjusted to compensate for that. However, I then would need to run the water/meth all the time. Not really sure I want to do that either. I'm out of town for another week yet and plan on looking at it more when i get home.

I think the Ping of which you speak is the methanol detonating at the high temps of WOT for a while. Running 100% water would keep the temps down, but the problem is how do you keep it from freezing. Lubrizol markets a product called PURINOX that is 20% water/ fuel emulsion that is supposed to eliminate NOX emmissions. The problem is it's about 5% more expensive than 100% DINO and puts out About 12% less power. The fact that it replaces 20% of the fuel tells me that there is an 8% increase in fuel economy due to the added water.

I agree that the Methanol is detonating. Also agreed about the water. Although my egt's are in a pretty normal range even when the pinging happens. only running about 950-1000* or so.... my pyro is in the up pipe to the turbo.... might lose a little temp by the time it gets there, but I doubt its that much?! I will try some other "blends" over the next few months and see what I come up with.

Also look through the performance section. Lots of guys running all sorts of kits there.

I recommend a mix of 30/70 methanol to water. The blue -20 windshield washer fluid works good. Not sure how well these setups run on a N/A diesel. I've run water meth on turboed diesels before and the main benifit is lower EGT's. The water molecules absorb heat while the methonal acts as a fuel and thus a little extra power is gained from a more complete burn. I'm not sure what is up with the pinging issues that Idaho Hillbilly is talking about. Sounds like a possible timing issue to me. My Cummins is variable timing so I never had that problem. Mine was rigged up to kick on at a certain boost pressure or pyro temp as well.
