E Brake problems

I had planned on installing new rotors and pads on my truck myself this weekend while on duty at the fire station. But while i was driving this morning to meet a friend to go to a firefighter expo today, there was a big weight shift in the back accompanied by lots of shaking and a loud grinding noise. So thinking this is probably more than what i could handle i decided to go straight to my fire house where luckily there is a repair shop next door. I drop my truck off at the shop for them to check out. They call later and say that the driver side ebrake basically disintegrated and lodged itself within the housing. The shop said that not only do i need a new e brake assembly but i need a new mounting bracket and that requires axle work. So i was wondering if this was an accurate statement and if so, how much work would actually be involved in this process?

Thanks,
Boyle

I had the same thing happen to mine. The parking brake backing plate rots then the pins that hold the parking brake shoes pull out leaving the shoes floating around in the brake drum. To replace the backing plate the axle and hub has to be removed.

Dag, so I'm guessing that's a pretty lengthy process to fix it?

Wow, awesome write up. Unfortunately I don't have any of those special tools myself so I guess I'll have to have my local shop change them out for me. Thanks a lot for the info, I appreciate it.
