Hey All,
I found out today that my shocks are in need of replacement. I was hoping I could hold off untill I got my 6" lift, but it looks like I am going to have to get shocks before I get my lift. Is there any shocks that I could get that would be compatible with a 6" lift? The bronco as of now has no lift what so ever, and its an '83. The shocks might be on the bronco for another 8 months or so until I get the money to lift it. I have seen shocks that say 4-6" lift, would those work? Any help would be great!!
They 6" shocks would bottom out with the stock lift height, ruining the shock and/or the shock mounts. I'd suggest going cheap until you lift it, no point in high dollar shocks that will just be cast aside.
The local Sears here has sensitrac shocks for trucks at $25 a shock... or you could also try a local parts store and ask what their cheapest shock is... a junkyard will sell you used shocks for next to nothing as well
Here is an idea,
Could I do this project the other way around? Where, I would use my new (cheep) shocks with my 6" lift until I got the cash to get the new shocks. Or would the cheep shocks be to short or somthing to that effect?
Ryan, How did you find out the shocks were bad? A shop tell you? Also, how far off are you from the doing the lift?
If your Bronco is driving fine right now, you can certainly keep the old shocks on just until you get the cash to do the lift. If it's going to be more than 6 months away, get some cheap shocks to hold you over.
These are STOCK shocks from 1983, completly rusted and compressed. There is no leakage because everything leaked out I am guessing around 1990. I went over a pot hole and the shock actually split up the side. When I go around turns it flexes and makes very gross sounds. If I did do the 6" lift, and used the cheep shocks, would it work?
A friend of mine back in school drove his Mustang around without front shocks for a long time. Interesting car. Someone had converted the front to a straight axle with leaf springs. Maybe they were going to do a 4X4 setup and ran out of money or something. Anyway, he could gun the gas a few times and actually get the front end to bounce all the way off the ground.
Yeah, it was a '70 coupe if I remember correctly. It certainly was one of a kind. Oh yeah, he also had long tube headers that he would run with NO pipes. Talk about loud. How he didn't get pulled over I'll never know.
