The check engine light came on a few weeks ago on my 1991 F-250 460. It came on after things were warmed up. And went off after i'd stop and started again. I took it in and the dealership said they couldnt anything wrong. So i dont know what could be the problem. It doese have 3+ month old gas in it. Would that throw the light? The tanks are almost empty so maybe I'll just fill up with some freash gas and tecron concentrate with chevron gas.
Did they check the codes for the computer? If the engine light went on, the computer stores that trouble code in the memory so you can retrieve it later.
Old gas won't trigger a code, but you can pull them yourself free anytime you want with a paperclip. The Haynes manual ($12 anywhere) tells how, but their code list stinks. Check mine.
I should mention I replaced a battery with a new one. The dealership said the computer will adjust and that is the reason the light is one. Correct? but the only comes when the engine warms up? I need to know because i will be going camping and taking my camper and bayliner boat and whant to know if anything will get hurt possibly the cataylist.
I dont understand why ford did or still doese design there computers to run the engine rich when the engine light comes on
i have a 93 f-250 with a 460, The check engine light comes on when i get at hwy speeds. I got a code 33, which is no egr opening, Could be a bad egr or soleniod, I just ignor the code, I checked the spark plugs to make sure they werent too lean and they looked good. IT is a big pain in the butt to change out an egr, everthing is so rusted. I just cant wait until the check engine light burns out.
I'm gonna post a new thread with instructions off the Ford Service CD on how to pull codes and a short list of them. Look for it in this and the Computer Programming forums.
