please look at the photos I took of the code scanner. Is there something that tells wheather the cats are working correctly or the COPs?
I have read some other posts listing this same code-
one replaced the cats and all was good, the other replaced the COPs and all was good.
What are your symptoms? Did you just throw the code or do you have a misfire? How many miles on truck? Have you ever had any misfire issues, injector issues? Based on the limited info posted I am pretty sure that you would be throwing a P300 or P301-P308 if it was a COP. If you just threw the code, with no running issues? It could just be a O2 sensor. You have two O2 sensors on both banks one in front of and one behind each Cat. The difference between the two is how your "efficiency" is measured. If it's reading out of bounds I would first check the o2 sensor and then the cat. I think the only way to check the cat is to drop it and visuallly inspect the inside. I am only a shade tree but that is the path I would take. Good Luck and Post what you find out. Shawn
Well I don't have the history on the truck, I just purchased it about a month ago. It has about 130,000 miles. I have replaced both o2 sensors after the cat. The code will come on and a few days later it will go off. Wait a week or so and it will come back on. It is the only code it throws. The truck does run a little rougher than I like. But I can't say it's def a misfire.
Congrats on the new truck! I went from 98' to an 06' love the 98' but man what a difference. Does your truck idle rough? When you step on it as in getting on the highway is your accelleration smooth, does it hiccup ever so slightly. I wonder if you know if the plugs have been replaced? You can have a misfire for quite sometime before it throws a misfire code usually the P300 or P301-P308, you know this from your 98 i am sure. If it's bad enough for you to chase it, not just the CEL, I would do fuel filter, plugs- maybe boots and COPS, and possibly a real injector cleaning. Not knowing the history, these items will eliminate a lot of possibilities and you will know your truck is ready for that long trip or whatever. I read on FTE here somewhere about someone chasing lack of power on acceleration and after changing everything but the Fuel Filter turned out to be the fuel filter.
BTW what are your thoughts on the 98' 5.4 2 valve vs. the 3 valve. Huge power difference?

actually never had a '98, We had a '00 and a '03, but this '04 is way ahead of both the others by leaps and bounds. It does idle rough and will kinda sputter once a month or so, but I floor it and pulls out of its rutt. when I get on it, it will hiccup on occasion, I did just change the plugs, I noticed that one of the COPs was a replacement, all others looked original. I bought boots at the same time as the plugs but were for the herritage so I didnt use them. we just got back from a 600 mile trip with no problems.
check you EGR valve pipe just quick mine had a rusted bolt it did give me those code and would stall when i would slow down an turn my idle rpm would drop to much and the power steering would make it drop and just stall but i never had the problem of it not starting
