ya. I decided I just didn't want to spend that much time so ours went back to the dealership...and ouch!!! but the dash doesnt squeek lol.
Last time I spent that much time on one of our cars was alternator replacement on 99 Merc Cougar...10 hrs during a road trip and some nice fella let me use his front yard and his tools.
Did my '01 last week. Read this http://motogrrl.com/blog/wp-content/...CoreRepair.pdf. Then youtube "Ford Expedition heater core replacement". You will see what you are in for. I was ascared of the job, but more afraid of spending $1000 on it. It was not bad. Intimidating, yes. Too much to do all at once, I did it over two days. Follow the advice to organize things. You do not have to remove the radio to pull the dash like it says in the pdf. Be patient, refer to the instructions and watch the video, you'll do fine. You will not need special tools or knowledge. I was in your shoes two weeks ago.
Unfortunately, I hadn't seen the motorgrrl steps before I did mine. So I did it the long hard way. And still had take half of the duct work and the main electrical loose to get at all the plenum bolts. But it worked. By the way....I didn't see anywhere previously, only afterwards. Please, PLEASE make sure you turn your heating cooling **** to midway between hot and cold. I didn't because it was only afterwards that I saw it. Pain in the keister to try and match up the blend door drive hole with it all thw way on heat, assume same for cold. That was no fun, and by that time your are just so done with it and ready to put it back together. Also, there is one bracket that doesn't make any sense. So make sure you mark it and draw a pic of where it goes. The one from motorgrrl makes it seem a lot easier than the way I did it. Hope it works for you.
ok so i opted to do the heater treater method and now the rear heat is working wonderful and the front heat is better than it was but the front heat still only gets warm and not really that hot (which is no good in new jersey since we get snow and i need the defrost)...the wierd thing is the rear works perfectlly but not the front! any ideas what this could be??? I really do not want to have to pull the dash since thats the whole reason i opted for the heater treater!
I'm actually battling the exact same issue. Just pulled the center console and lower vents to replace the blend door actuator. Had a blend door as well but didn't need it. Rattled the old actuator and there were parts flying around inside, that little motor. Turned the blend door by hand no problem. Now I have rear heat which I didn't before, and barely any heat in the front. I just drained and filled the coolant and did a half arsed flush, but it didn't help, besides the rear heat. Checked the coolant lines on the engine by the firewall and one going in is hot and the other coming out is cold at the firewall but both after the T are hot. So more than likely the heater core is clogged. Already picked up 5/8th tubing from Lowes and a female garden hose adapter to use to flush just the heater core. I have a Prestone flush kit, but I don't wanna cut into the hoses, nor have the water pressure cut in half at the OEM T in the hose. I too am in NJ. I'm waiting till Monday to tackle this since it'll be closer to 50 and sunny. I'm flushing just the heater cores, front and rear.
I would check the coolant hoses come from the firewall past the T in the center of them, not closer to the battery. The right one is your in to the heater core and the left is your out from the heater core. If the out is warm or cold, the heater core is clogged. In the rear of the truck on the left hand side is a panel opposite the panel for the tire jack, remove it and feel the hoses there as well, those are for the rear heater core, and more than likely both will be hot.
Anytime! Also keep up posted, if a heater core flush doesn't work, next step is a blend door, and the end game is a new heater core which no one wants to do. Once I finish the heater core flush on Monday, I'll post some pictures if I remember, and the outcome.
I wonder how some get all worried about working on the blend door, I find it easy and I have never had to remove the dash and I have done this job a few times, one for myself and a few times for some friends. It takes me about an hour and a half and thats taking my time and cleaning up the mess from the dremel tool. Of course if its work on the heater core itself being done, then thats another story.
