Ford Equalock

Does anybody know the specs for the belleville spring in a ford equalock.... My spring looks good, but I just wanted to see what the stock specs were it anybody has them... either height of the cone or pressure the spring was supposed to produce. Thanks

Sorry, but it looks like no one knows this one.

A long time ago, I rebuilt an Equa-Lok, and my problem was that the new clutch/steel pack ended up a lot thicker than the original pack, and it took a lot of effort to get it back into the diff carrier. Then it acted like it was always locked, as it took so much clamping force to get bolt the carrier halves together. I don't understand this, as I used the exact replacement parts specified in the Ford catalog.

wow.... I've done a lot of digging and conventional wisdom was the traction loc was a better design... but a lot of old schoolers said it was more like what you were talking about... that the equalock functioned too much like a spool when new and then dies because the clutches work out necessitating more constant rebuilds.... Just wondering if you kept the thing and what the service life was like? As I understand it there was and early version and later version and the quantity of the clutches and clutch washers varied.... seems like its will be a guessing game for me if I rebuild the thing... which I might do. In the past I have always put out the money for a true-track usually because I am converting am open rear.... but I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Unfortunately, I did not do much with that differential, so I have no idea of its longevity. It's been sitting somewhere in the garage for the last 20 years.

I think if you use your vehicle often on surfaces with little traction, like off-road, you need more spring preload on the clutches so they can get going, so this type of differential would be more useful. I would normally prefer less spring preload on the streets. Ford usually specifies about 40 lbs-ft break-away torque on the clutch pack, but I never figured out what mine was, it was so tight.

Thanks for the 40 ft/lbs spec... That will help a lot if i need to source a new washer. Generally i like to use lying around when it comes to 28 spline stuff because i dont thinks its worth the investment... And if i can make this differential work it would be great...
