That was from the 79 factory shop manual 2 volume set; what you see and engine. I also have the 75 but am missing the Chassis in that set. I think it is a 5 volume set.

If you need a page just ask and I will scan it for you... P.S. Most are like the first pic; drawings rather than pictures.

EVERY part on your truck is illustrated here: 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, available on a CD from hipoparts.com

Steering column parts will be found in Illustration Section 35 and are far more detailed than in the shop manual, as it shows all the parts in the entire column in an exploded view.

This should be the FIRST thing that anyone who owns one of these trucks buys!
You will not believe how many times you will reference this.
Between the parts catalog and the FACTORY service manuals you can pretty much answer any questions you'll have.

The problem is, that most peeps won't get up off it and buy the parts catalog.

Either they're too cheap (but think nothing of spending mega-bucks for beer), or would rather depend on the FTE members that do have one.

The problem is, that the members that I'm aware of that do have one aren't getting any younger. I'm 67, jermafenser is a little older and I would guess that you aren't too far behind me.

So...how much longer will we be able to do this jazz?

1973 F250 column shift tube repair

Hi- new member, but old geezer- In replacing the broken shift bowl in my 1973 F250, I can't figure out how to get the shift tube to register with the shifter arm at the bottom of the column. Spring pressure is keeping the tube and the attached bowl up too high. Shop manual just says to attach stuff, without any hints as to how to do it. Can any of you guys tell me what to do? or what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks, Olwillie in Nor Cal

Wish I could help you but I haven't dissembled one completely and it's been a number of years since I took the top apart....

Hopefully someone that has will have a answer. Welcome to the FTE!

There is a difference between auto, stick, and tilt.

Probably needs to be done on a bench with two people.

Good luck! Glenn

I have only worked on 78-79s but i think the components are similar and there are 2 bolts in the top of the column. They are a "T" bolt. They have nuts on the steering wheel side. Upon disassembly you remove or loosen the nuts and the 2 halves sandwitched together seperate. When you re-assemble, those "T" bolts have to be pushed in toward the canter of the column and the spring pressed at the same time, with everything lined up. Those "T" bolts grab the column tube on one side then you crank the nuts down. Look for these "T" bolts and if yours has these it should be straight forward from there.

I am 25 and I have the 79 factory shop manual, the 79 factory engine manual, and the 79 pre delivery and post deliverymanuals. I have yet to need more than this. However, Numberdummy's parts CD sounds nice.
