I noticed something the other day... If I wait for the glow plug light to turn off it takes 3 maybe 4 seconds to start when cold... If I wait till the fuel pump stops making the ticking sound it starts in less than a second cold! Curious if anyone else has noticed this...
Mines a fresh 06 with SCT dummy plugs oil cooler and a partridge in a pear tree done to it....
My truck was doing that, thought it was normal. Had a leaking cover on the fuel pressure regulator, did the blue spring/new cover and don't hear the pump anymore. I guess it's done by th time the injector buzz finishes.
I recently just replaced the pressure regulator spring and the key hole gasket.... Is it the injectors or fuel pump making that noise? Is the fuel draining back to the tank? I honestly dont know
Not sure where you live, Daniel (cold or warm country). But for one of the trucks I drive at work (w/6.0), that happens to be a hard starter, if I turn the key till the glow plug light goes out, then hit it again before turning over, it will start much easier.
The 6.0 in my personal truck starts good, and always has, even with just hitting the GP once. Don't know why the work truck has issues... I have just changed the batteries in my personally owned truck the other day and it starts even better than before... But I digress. As far as your rig, and the one at my work that is hard starting, try hitting the glow plugs twice consecutively.
me2 neither, I just noticed it acting a little different after the leak fix. I didn't think too much about it until I read your post. I chalked it up to leaking down while parked over night. I think if yours were leaking you would likely smell fuel in the cab though.

Diesel fuel needs Heat & compression to ignite
the Longer you wait to start the more Heat the Glow Plugs generate
on the Flip side it could be a fuel pressure problem IDK taking extra time to build up the pressure
Have you changed fuel filters in awhile
My truck never takes that long of a crank to Start Knock on Wood
hmmmm 7k on current fuel filter the dealer installed.... Ill change it next oil change. If this where a gas engine I would think that its having to pump the fuel up to the engine from the tank when cold. I know the diesel is more complicated than that....
Not too worried about it it runs like a scalded ape!
I also seem to recall that some have mentioned FICM as possible culprit for long starts too, which I seem to recall is a relatively common issue. Techs, correct me if I am wrong. Also, I believe there is a check valve at the HPOP that can leak down after sitting. This could cause long cranking to build back up oil pressure (IIRC needed to fire injectors).
My 2005 with 200,000 has had issues this fall with starting for the first time. If I cycle glow plugs one time at 20 degrees I end up having to crank for quite a while and sometimes need to cycle glow plugs again to get a start. Seems like this just started happening after replacing fuel filters.
I've noticed on mine that if I cycle the key 3 times it starts almost instantly. If not, it can take up to 5-7 seconds of cranking to start and my FICM voltage is all good. Any ideas ?
