eot question

Just got back from towing the camper (9000#) with my Excursion for the holiday and noticed my fan was engaging more often than usual. My mileage was down 1.5 mpg for the trip we make often. I still have the stock exhaust on it as my egts are never a problem. I was just wondering if a 4" exhaust may keep my fan from engaging.

My work truck always has a 4500# work trailer on it and I have only heard the clutch kick in once or twice when it's hotter that heck outside and i'm driving like a bat outta... heck.

I don't think the exhaust is justified when I only tow 10% of the time with the EX... Unless it may help my coolant temps and the fan from engaging. If you want to read into convincing the wife who may not like the "redneck" sound, yes this may be a factor.

was it windy when you where pulling with the EX. that will make it pull a lot harder.
i dont see how 4" can make much deference on motor temp the most that i have read is only 50-100* drop.

It was windy on the way home, but more gusty than anything. It's possible that I drove faster than usual. I usually set the cruise control so I don't speed, but I have been trying not to use the cruise when towing so my od doesn't shift up and down as much. I try not to go more than 60-65 when towing , but with the cruise off I tend to speed lol.

I don't see how the exhaust would make things worse, as snake said, it should just drop your EGT's a bit and help the truck exhale. When was the last time your coolant was flushed? Perhaps the thermostat is having issues, or maybe the oil cooler is leaking or something?

My guess goes to the thermostat or coolant temperature sensor.

Just flushed last spring with new thermostat and waterpump as well. Maybe coolant temp sensor. Never thought of that.
