Hi - have a strange IP issue, tried searching but didn;t find anything.
had the truck (88 f350, 7.3) for a few years, and sometimes it runs rch and smokes and gets about 10mpg towing. other times it runs fine gets 12mpg towing. the truck was NA when i got it, and had a rod knock.
brought it to pinellas diesel (when it was running OK i guess) and they said it was fine. other than the rod.
got a rebuilt 73 and banks turbo, but the IP with it was questionable so i used the old one. same issue. i had turned up the FP for the turbo but i guess it hit one of the rich times and i had to turn it back down. so now sometimes i have smoke on any acceleration, other times it has no smoke. and the strangest part it that it sure seems like it has more power when it is not smoking.
is this something simple, or just time for a new IP?
Do you ever run fuel additive through it? These older pumps were build to be lubricated from the sulfur in the "old" fuel which is now pretty much non existent in pump fuel. I've had my truck die when pulling up to a stop. Then it would start right up again. It would do that every time I stopped. I was told by fte to ad a bottle of the "diesel kleen" and sure enough, after driving for less than 30 min, it quit doing it. I know "red line" is a great additive but I don't know if it will free up a sticky pump like the diesel kleen'. I'll run a jug of the diesel kleen every other month and run the red line between that. Don't know if that'll fix your problem or not but certainly the cheapest troubleshoot. LOL You might just have sticky and gummed up components in your pump.

That is a sticking metering valve. They start doing that when the pump is going... you can run dieselkleen or ATF through them to prolong their life.
OP, on second thought. Fill your fuel filter up with ATF, and unhook your fuel feed from the pump to the filter tower. Run the truck for a minute or so, and shut truck off. Let the ATF soak overnight and try again the next day.
This can prolong the life of your pump, if the issue still persists.... time for a new IP.
metering valve makes a lot of sense, thanks 1BadB2!
i have run diesel kleen periodically and use either that or atf in the filter when i changed it and when i ran out of fuel and when i started the new engine. i'll try atf overnight, and will look for an IP
