since wednesday I've been having bad luck and I was looking foward towards the weekend. well friday night I was towing a 18 ft cargo trailer, filled with camping equipment. I was getting off one highway and onto another when I felt a big thump. the trailer was still tracking fine so I just went on, we got to the camp ground and nothing seemed un-normal. well on the way back JUST after leaving the camp I noticed the trailer wasn't tracking right, got out checked the trailer it was hitched up right and the tires were fine so we went on, since it still wasn't tracking right I was going to stop at a gas station to check the tire presure then I heard the sound of metal draging, thinking it was the safety chain I got out to fix it. got to the coupler and the chains were still attached. so I looked under the truck, nothin, then looked under the trailer and found that the only thing left of the left 3 pack leaf springs was half a leaf. I ended up towing it some 80 miles home fortunatly with no incident.
I would say that you were extreamly lucky. I have seen some real disastors with less problems than you experienced. I think that I would go through that trailer with a fine tooth comb and find out what else might be wrong.
I dont' think that you will get that luck again. but you made it this time;
i have heard of axles coming out from under a 5th wheel camper because of broken leaf springs. broken springs on camper trailers are actually somewhat common because of their weight and the fact that they are typically taken off road which makes them twist a lot. id say you were pretty lucky, but im glad to hear nothing went wrong.
