Hard Starting when hot
http://www.fordtrucks.com/forums/sho...=hard+starting
What is happening is the truck will start up and run fine when cold. After a run (20min or more) is when the problem arises. If I only shut it off for a few minutes (no more than 2-3) than it will start right back up. If I let it sit any longer, it will crank for a bit and eventually start. It usually will crank for a good 7-10 seconds before starting in this condition.
One thing I did find that makes a difference is to crank the truck over about 3-4 cranks, turning the key to the off position and then cranking it again. It will usually start within a couple cranks if i do it this way.
Any help or suggestions.
Background: Newish complete engine that I installed in my truck, which was supposed to have a new alternator on it. New battery & cables, new starter, solenoid. Pretty much everything.
I was having starting issues after having the engine warmed up. Originally, I thought that the higher compression in a warm engine was keeping my starter from turning the engine over. After all, everything else was new. The engine would turn over fine when it was cold though.
After screwing around with other systems for awhile (carb, ignition), I did a battery check only to find out it was not being completely charged, and therefore, did not have enough power to apply to the starter when starting. I changed out the old voltage regulator, which didn't fix it. So after eliminating all of the other possibilities, I replace that and voila` no more issues.
Obviously, avoid replacing parts which don't need to be replaced (like me), but I finally solved the problem. Check each component's function first, by using standard operating tests.
