air impact

Looks like I'm in the market for a new air impact. My old craftsman won't always remove lug nuts on the truck anymore so I'm thinking it's time for a new one. Anyone got any recommendations? Seems like most of the new ones have a lot of plastic and are all MIC.

I don't need anything outrageously expensive, but at the same time don't want to pay a couple of hundred dollars for a piece of junk.

I/R 231, hands down the best one for its size. 500 Lbs torque and $120. You'll never need another one.

Looks like the 231 is another MIC variety now. Are you sure they're still good?

I've used IR's TiMax guns (2135 ti max sounds right, it came from Sears), they're better than most I've used but they're $$$. I use a corded electric impact at home, my Clarke brand gun from Tractor Supply cost less than $50 and has been working for years, still pops the lugs off my truck without trying. No compressor, no noise, no hassle, if electric ratchets would catch up with impacts I'd never use an air compressor again.

You are right Chris. They are made in China but at least it is an American company and the profits stay right here in the good ol USA. Unlike when you buy a Korean or Japanese car the profits go overseas.

Buying from a Japanese car is like employing an illegal alien, sure you are employing a neighbor but he sends the money back to Mexico.

I have a 2131 and a 2135. Both are great guns, lots of power, outpowered only by higher end Snap-On and Mac Tools guns.

I've seen the 2135. It says assembled in the US, which is at least something. The selector dial and buttons on the back seem to be of better quality than many of the dial selectors I've seen on the back of several other models.

I believe the 2135 has a max of 1100 ft lbs or something like that. Should I be looking for some gloves that offer wrist support?

I understand what you're saying, and can agree on principle. I also understand that it's unreasonable to think you will never buy MIC stuff. The problem I have is when an American company outsources their production and sells the same Chinese junk, but expects you to pay twice as much because of their name. If I'm going to buy Chinese crap, I don't want to pay twice as much because the sticker on the side has a name I'm familiar with.

Of course I guess if you try to look at the big, big picture, the warranty departments for all these companies that service the junk they sell are at least employing some folks here.

I realize I might end up with a MIC wrench, I just want to explore my options first and value the feedback from all of you in terms of which ones work well.

Never thought of that. Thanks for keeping it simple Tom.

I'll put another vote in for an IR 2135, mine hasn't let me down and you can get a rubber cover so you don't have to worry about banging it up as much.
I'll also second the craigslist recommendation, I always see some impacts on there for a decent price, and its usually older ones that were built here.

Another thought, have you looked into rebuilding the craftsman? It might be possible to get parts, I know IR's can be rebuilt.
