We have a 1985 F-250 as our farm truck. It has a 351w with a c-6 behind it. For a long time now the truck made a little more noise than it should upon starting but now its gotten very bad. Occasionally the starter will free spin like the teeth are of it or the flywheel, if you grab the fan belt and get the motor to turn over some then it will start. We have replaced the starter a few times as it will bandaid the problem but it then returns. We've rotated the motor over and the flywheel is not missing any teeth but is wore some, truck gets started atleast 10 times per day. I'm not sure what the problem is, the flywheel doesn't look too bad but maybe its wore more than I realize causing the issue, any input is appreciated, thanks
Are you positive you have been using starters for a C-6? Manual and auto starters are different. The engagement depth. If you pull your starter, you should see where the entire width of the ring gear is wearing on the starter gear. If it's not fully engaging the ring gear, it's wrong.
A ring gear that's a little worn shouldn't be doing that, I've seen some pretty bad ones that worked just fine yet.
I dont know , but , when mine was doing this it was b/c the bell housing on the C6 was broken. Could just need to be shimmed or maybe the bendix gear is wearing out on the starter.
It is the longer reach starter. when it first started acting up i dug though some stuff we saved from a parts truck found the starter but after holding them side by side the difference is pretty noticable so it is the longer starter. Any other thoughts? I looked around for cracks before thought maybe where the starter mounted was cracken and angled the starter but all looks well
i am having the exact same problem with my 86 f150. its doing the identical thing as the fore mentioned 351. what can be done? of those pics the one on the right is of the automatic?
Yes, the longer one on the right is meant for the flexplate of an automatic.
Check that the bushing in the nose is tight and not allowing the shaft to back away from the ring gear.
There's an amazing amount of torque developed there.
So, I've had in the past issues with starters and flex plates with the c6 trans 3 different flex plates and after helicoil drilling, tapping bolt holes, I found that the upper flex plate cover properly aligns the starter, also if you remove it you will suffer the same fate as me, an expert at changing states in less than 5 mins on and off....noteworthy advise, if you are having issues make sure that cover is not deformed in any way...particularly the areas regarding the bolt holes and where the starter mates with the cover, also use extreme caution if removing the transmission...
I also believe part of the issue is all but the 460 motors use a different starter for autos & sticks and the same goes for the metal motor plate that locates the starter.
Get any of them mixed up and you could have issues.
The other thing is on rebuilt starters they may list them to fit both so they only need to keep 1 in stock and there is no easy way to that I know of to tell them apart.
Good luck
