I'm looking for a new air cleaner for my '78 400. It will be on a Edel 600cfm. I got a smokin deal on a 14 x 3 1/2" k&n filter. My question is what prevents one from putting a thicker filter in a 3" air cleaner? I have never had an open style air cleaner, but it seems from pictures that only the stud length would determine the max thickness of the element and that is easily changed.
This post reminded me of a trick to determine underhood clearance:
Take a piece of children's modeling clay and mold it in a small roll, 2-3" long. Attach the clay to the front edge of the air cleaner, and close the hood. When you open the hood, the clay will have compressed to the underhood clearance that you have...... __________
