ok my uncle has a 93 ranger with 4.0 and auto trans. it will crank right up and sound and feel perfect. after a while of running it will almost cut off and you cant get 20mph out of it but then all of a sudden it will pick right back up and go strong. does not do it every day at least every other day. i scanned with a matco tools diag tool running a KOER test and got the following codes:
556 - fuel pump primary
543 - fuel pump secondary
186 - injector pw higher
185 - MAF low
176 - system lean bank2
175 - adaptive limit bank 2
172 - system lean bank 1
171 - adaptive limit bank 1
in my opinion im first thinking too clean the maf, and replace the fuel pump relay. other than that i dont know which way to go or if im even on a good track.
i really need some help on this one. thanks for any help you may have.
Any chance the fuel pump is going bad on you? Possible blockage in the fuel line somewhere - how's the filter? Where it's intermittent, I'm not sure if a blockage is happening - just throwing it out there... Has the fuel pressure been checked?
Sounds like it's happening after the engine has warmed up so, maybe that's the key right there...
Not sure if cleaning the MAF will help, but it wouldn't hurt either...
How many miles on the truck? How up to date is it on routine maintenance items such as plugs and wires, filters (including fuel filter), etc? Has fuel pressure been checked, especially while the engine is acting up?
With all the trouble codes relating to the sensors in the exhaust system, I'd start by replacing them, clear the codes and see where you are at interms of operation and trouble codes.
as far as routine maint. im not sure. not my truck. it dont have to be warmed up for it to act up. it will do it 5 minutes after starting the engine or an hour after starting the engine and sometimes it wont do it at all. as far as the fuel pressure that does sound like that should be checked. where should it be while at idle? im not sure how many miles are on the truck. i should have looked at it while i was over there.
he also told me that sometimes when it starts aacting up he can tap on the relay for the fuel pump and it will smooth up. he then said that he put a different one in its place (although used) and it seems to happen a little less frequent. i will find out about when the fuel filter was replaced and also when the plugs was replaced and how many miles are on the truck.
