I have an 85 F250 with the 4.9L In line 6 cyl. 302. I was recently driving at hiway speeds when it started to feel like I had an exhaust leak. The engine ran rough, I lost a little power at low RPMs, and it also sounded like an exhaust leak.
When I started to take things apart to replace the exhaust and intake manifold gasket, I noticed a hole on the front side of the manifold near where it bends to meet the exhaust pipe. This hole is not threaded and is a clean cut round hole, but I cannot figure out what used to be in it. When I cover the hole, all the problems cease.
I take it that you mean you have the 302 not the 6 cyl. and being a 85 it would be carbed, so that hole you mention is more than likely for a heat rise tube to the carb for your choke.

If the threads are gone, then you will need a replacement manifold, then you can plug it off.

4.9L = 300 c.i.
5.0L = 302 c.i.
Hope this helps.
If you do a mathmatical problem, technically you are both correct as the 300 AND 302 CID averages out to 4.9L. Ford called the 302 a 5.0L to eliminate confusion.
