Your truck's EFI351 has 8.8:1 compression, and was factory rated at 210 net horsepower@3,800rpm, and 315 ft./lb. of torque@2,800rpm.As for what options your XLT came with, you can look on the data label located inside the driver's side door jam. It will list all of the option codes. You can then look at a 1990 F-Series/Bronco shop manual, and look up these codes. Generally speaking, XLT package included a chrome grille, headlight trim, bumpers, an upgraded cloth interior, power locks & windows, cruise control,an AM/FM radio, air conditioning, sport wheel covers, or styled steel wheels, added interior insulation, and different badging/emblems.Ford always offers a plethora of different options for certain packages. The XLT's came with a standard EFI4.9L I-6,backed by a 5-speed manual tranny. The 5.0L & 5.8L V-8s were optional, along with the AOD & E4OD automatics. If you give me the codes from your truck's door tag, I can tell you what it originally came with,by looking up the codes in my '90 shop manual.
No, that isn't what I meant. What is that? What I meant is to list the codes that are found inside your driver's side door jam. It should be a decal with a code for axle, color, trim, D.S.O. area, date of manufacture(month/year),payload ratings, spring codes, and it will also list your truck's VIN.From the infomation found on this decal, you can see originally what options your truck came with from the factory. When you open the driver's door, look to the right, inside the door jam area. The data label/decal should be right there. Then just list the codes, and I'll decode them for you.An example : my 1990 Bronco lists axle:H9, D.S.O.:16, date of manufacture:8/89, color: MJ MG , etc. These breakdown like this : 3.55:1 limited-slip rear axle, Philadelphia selling district, built in the month of August of 1989, two-tone Deep Shadow Blue & Bright Regatta Blue paint. When looking at the paint code, two sets of codes mean two-tone paint.
WB-139 : 139" wheelbase (supercab)
TYPE-x151 : F-150 4x2 (6,050 GVW)
BODY-FBM : couldn't find 'F', but B=Regatta Blue, M=Supercab
TRANS-E : E4OD
AXLE-18:3.08:1 open rear axle (3,800 lb. capacity)
TAPE-1 : 2 different codes : on Bronco & F-Series with deluxe two-tone,or Victoria two-tone '1' is the code for Light Blue/Bright Blue tape stripe. On F-Series SRW in solid paint color, '1' is the code for Red/Orange tape stripe.
SRPINGS- E D : E is front spring code.Part # listed is EOTA-5310-EC
D is rear spring code.Part # listed is E6TA-5560-NA
This book doesn't list spring capacities in pounds-it merely lists the factory part #s.
3.08:1 open rear axle... What does the open rear axle mean? Are you sure its only 3.08 becuase I have 33" tires and I still beat little chev 350s... pretty bad too... What is up with that?
There is a tag on the rear diff that says 3 08 or 3 55. If it's a LS, it will say 3L08 or 3L55. Maybe the previous owner changed the gears, because 3.08s would hardly move on 33" tires ha. I have 32" tires on a 3.55 ratio, and that brings it down to about 3.15. The way to check, is make a chalk line on the driveshaft where the U-joint connects to the rear axle. Put some jack stands under the rear axle so the tires are off the ground. Turn the tire 1 revolution, and count how many times the driveshaft turns. If it turns 3 times, it's a 3.08. If 3 1/2 times, it's a 3.55. If it's more than 3 1/2, but less than 4, it's a 3.73. If its just over 4 times, it's 4.10s.

Well I checked it and I have 3.08 gears, in some ways this makes me happy... others very sad... I am happy to know that my truck is easily movin 33s with that ratio but sad because I am going to have to change this very soon. Would this be affecting my gasmilage with the 3.08? A friend of mine and I are looking in to changing the gears anyways. He has a mustang with an 8" rear and will also be installing 4:11 gears. Its going to be exciting to see our cars after this.
The mustang should have an 8.8", unless your saying 8 as short. If you think 308s are moving your 33's, you have a pleasant suprise ahead of you I can tell ya that. How many RPMs are you running on the highway at 65? You shouldn't even be able to use OD.

Well my friends mustang is a 69. It has an 8.0 rear. Its completly custom tho he has spent about 15,000 on it. That scares me by the "suprise" I did what you told me to do... Jack it up, chalk line, rotate tire. Went around 3 times and about an inch. 65 I run about 1500 RPS and about 1700 with the A/C on, When I turn off OD it jumps up to over 2200... More than that I think but I dont ever do it. I am really confused about my truck now. whats goin on??

I think what he meant by 'surprise' was that if/when you put some steeper gears in there, you'll be pleasantly "surprised" by the way your truck will sit you back in the seat after the gear swap!
