the 4wd sys went nuts last night, prevented me from having some fun in the mud too basiclly what happened is a while ago i took the dash apart to install a set of white face inbdiglo gauge (man they look nice). and when i did it it was still winter so i was using 4hi. i left it in 4hi when i pulled into garage then proceeded to take dash apart, removing the harness for the 4wd button was nessecaqry. when i re assembled the dash the 4hi light stayed on, just dimmer than when engauged. i used the 4x4 once since this happened and all worked ok except the "4x4" indicator on the dash did not light up. but i know the 4x4 was engauged, as i was in sand and did not get stuck but i felt it when i turned so i know it WAS working. anyways i was planning to go muddin yesterday and engauged the 4wd, or so i thought. no click no nothing, i even tried pushing the button then going into 4low to see if that worked. i pulled the sswitch off and the dash out again to see if i forgot something, i even replaced all the lightbulbs thinking i blew out a buld and some "magic circut" was not complete cause of the bulb (damn alternator bulb) but still nothing. i really believe, since the 4wd worked the other day the switch went to hell.
PLEASE HELP IT'S MUDDIN SEASON AND I WANNA GET SOME! SOME J*** GUY THINKS HE GONNA TAKE ME!

does this sound like it's the switch?

 

I've heard of switches going out. It seems to me there is a module (behind the rear panel where the rear washer fluid is kept?) that has a diagnostic button on it.
Have you probed the connections and wiring to see if you have power after the switch?

 

i tested the switch with a multimeter (for resistance) and it was all foobar. but i get no check engine lights or codes. but i will look into the diagnostic thing...note i have a 94 eddie bauer.
