How can I get the most out of my 302? It's for my 89 f150 4x4. The motor is out and on a stand. I don't have alot to spend so..... I'll be doing most of the work myself which isn't a problem. I'm just wondering if the computor is going to allow me to make changes, ie(cam, mass, roller rockers, bigger fuel injectors, performer intake and so on). OR should I just rebuild it the same? I do like four wheelin, but it's not gonna be entering any truck pulls......or is it........
If your on a tight budget you could find a 94+ 302 with a roller cam , put the cam and roller parts in yours with 1.7 rockers , or use the mustang HO cam , both will work with SD , long tube headers and a set of GT-40 heads....most all these parts can be found used.....Lew
On a super tight budget get the Comp 31-255-5 cam and lifter set and put the motor back together, the stock intake is plenty big enough for the motor as are the stock 19lb injectors so there is no need to change either of those.
If you're doing a rebuild obviously you should strip it down and take it to a machine shop for inspection and whatever milling is necessary and then reassemble with new bearing and whatever oversize pistons/rings it needs.
If you already have it out and apart, grind down the thermactors in the exhaust ports and deburr the intake ports, small gains but they matter. X2 on the roller cam stuff. You might want to get some newer injectors of the same flow rate with the 4 hole design instead of the 1 hole design. Again, small differences, but they matter. I have a few parts layin around if you're interested in anything.
